Are upholstered headboards outdated? Here's what interior designers say, and which beds they're choosing in 2023
Upholstered headboards, once a design staple featuring tufted styles and neutral colors, are undergoing a significant transformation rather than becoming obsolete. While the traditional towering, tufted beige or grey upholstered headboard is considered dated, the concept of upholstered headboards remains relevant in modern bedroom design. Interior designers are embracing new forms, colors, shapes, and textures to update this classic bedroom element.
The evolution of upholstered headboards involves three primary changes: color, shape, and texture. Regarding color, there's a distinct shift away from pastels, greys, and beiges towards richer, more saturated hues. Designers are opting for deep plums, various shades of dark green (from forest to muted), and bold colors, even in otherwise relaxing bedroom palettes. This move signifies a resurgence of upholstered headboards, but with a vibrant and contemporary twist. Furthermore, pattern is increasingly incorporated, creating opportunities for pattern-on-pattern designs when combined with bedding.
Shape is another crucial aspect of this modernization. The previously popular towering arch shape is being replaced by sleeker, more refined forms. Designers like Barbara Bachmann emphasize the importance of distinct shapes in modern headboards. Current trends favor rounded edges and more organic, wavy lines over perfectly circular or semi-circular forms, which might also risk dating over time. Low-profile headboards, often in simple rectangular forms, are also gaining popularity. These create a minimaluxe aesthetic, providing the impression of a headboard without being overwhelming, making them particularly suitable for smaller bedrooms. This shift reflects a desire for headboards that offer structure without excessive bulk or fuss, encouraging experimentation with other bedding elements.
Finally, texture and material play a vital role in the contemporary upholstered headboard. While cotton and linen were once common, there's a growing preference for softer, more luxurious materials. Velvet and boucle are prominent choices, offering a comforting and elegant tactile experience. The tufted look, previously ubiquitous on both furniture and headboards, is being supplanted by cleaner lines and fluted designs. Boucle, in particular, is highly popular for its soft texture, similar to velvet, and contributes to a cozy bedroom ambiance. Designers suggest that cleaner lines and classic looks in materials like these contribute to a longer lifespan for the headboard's style, with the option to refresh the fabric after several years for an updated look.
