Your Family Decorator: Monopoli a winner along Italy’s Adriatic

The author recently explored the streets of Monopoli, an ancient town on Italy's Adriatic coast, offering an alternative to more commonly visited Italian cities like Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Naples, Capri, Milano, and Vincenza. Monopoli, characterized by its cobblestone streets, sailing and fishing ports, beaches, and intimate Old World-style taverns, presents a unique Italian experience, largely undiscovered by mass tourism. The journey began with a flight to Bari, a major city on the east coast, followed by a less than two-hour drive to Monopoli. During the visit, the author and their associate Brinsley Matthews stayed at Villa San Martino, where they learned about traditional Italian table settings, specifically the practice of placing forks and soup spoons with their handles up to display family crests. This detail evoked a longing for past eras and proper dining etiquette. A highlight of the trip was a dinner at la Locanda dei Mercanti, a local tavern owned by Marzantonio Biasi. The meal featured local delicacies such as prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, gnocchi with marinara, breadsticks, and fresh cream-filled pastries, all prepared by Biasi's sister, Antonia. The dining experience also included a perfectly grilled catch of the day and local Chianti. The restaurant's ambiance was described as seaport-themed, adorned with antique marine memorabilia and country Italian pine cupboards and tables draped with yellow-and-white checkered cloths. The walls were brightly stuccoed white. The restaurant's interior design provided various decorating ideas, particularly for those seeking an Old World atmosphere. The author suggested using terracotta tile floors with Italian design insets, incorporating black, white, and olive green elements. Given Monopoli's location in olive and wine country, the article emphasized sampling local olives and other regional delicacies. The article also included a postscript about a retrospective exhibition back in Palm Beach. The author visited the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens to see artist Edwina Sandys and her husband, Richard Kaplan, preparing an exhibition of Sandys's sculptures, paintings, and other works. The exhibition was scheduled to run through April 1 at the garden, located at 253 Barcelona Road in West Palm Beach, and was hosted by the Gentlemen of the Garden. Edwina Sandys, a former Palm Beach resident who maintained strong ties with the island, was being honored at an opening party. #ItalianTravel #Monopoli #AdriaticCoast #ItalianCuisine #InteriorDesignIdeas #OldWorldCharm #TravelBlog #CulturalExperience #DiningEtiquette #ItalianTravel #Monopoli #AdriaticCoast #ItalianCuisine #InteriorDesignIdeas #OldWorldCharm #TravelBlog #CulturalExperience #DiningEtiquette
