See How This New Orleans Furniture Brand Makes Unique Pedestal Tables
Doorman, a furniture company founded by Alex Geriner in New Orleans, began in 2008 when Geriner crafted his first bed using salvaged materials from Hurricane Katrina-damaged homes, specifically a door and decorative ceiling tin. Initially, the company's focus was on utilizing reclaimed wood and architectural salvage from the aftermath of the natural disaster. Over time, Doorman evolved significantly, and by 2015, it expanded its product line to include a comprehensive range of home furnishings, such as metal canopy beds, wooden dining tables, nightstands, and bar stools.
In 2019, Geriner envisioned a new pedestal dining table design that would distinguish itself from existing market offerings. The goal was to create a piece that was "carved and tapered" and possessed an "organic form" capable of being customized in various sizes and colors. The design and production process for these tables are intricate, requiring more than 24 hours to complete each pedestal. The process begins with sourcing wood, typically maple, poplar, or American walnut, from mills in the Southeast. These solid blocks of wood are roughly carved, then a hole is drilled through the center, allowing them to be mounted onto a custom-designed lathe.
The lathe spins the wood, enabling further carving and shaping of the organic form. Once the carving is complete, the pedestal undergoes a sanding process before being stained to achieve the desired finish. Each pedestal is then paired with a tabletop, available in multiple shapes, including classic rectangles and extendable round options. The entire creation of one table spans approximately a week. Doorman collaborates with local, independent shipping services to deliver these handmade tables to customers across the globe.
Geriner emphasizes the profound significance of the home as a sanctuary—a place for respite and destressing. He views the decision of customers to integrate Doorman's furniture into their personal spaces as a deeply rewarding and ultimate compliment, acknowledging the meticulous effort and design invested in each piece. The company's commitment to craftsmanship and the use of natural materials aims to provide customers with unique and meaningful additions to their homes.
