'ascendance' is a petrified wood fireplace designed by metaplace industries
Metaplace Industries is set to launch 'ascendance,' a unique fireplace crafted from petrified wood, at New York City’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) from May 19th to 22nd, 2019. Founded by Nick Wray, Metaplace Industries aims to merge naturally occurring materials with man-made design, creating objects that bridge ancient formations and contemporary living. The 'ascendance' fireplace is a prime example, utilizing material that has undergone millions of years of geological transformation.
Petrified wood is the fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation, formed through a process called permineralization. Over vast periods, the original organic matter of a tree is replaced by minerals, effectively turning the wood into stone while meticulously preserving its cellular structure and appearance. This natural process inspired Metaplace Industries to conceptualize a freestanding fireplace from an individual petrified wood trunk. The inherent properties of petrified wood mean that, despite its woody origin, it does not burn, functioning instead with the durability and aesthetics of natural stone.
For the 'ascendance' fireplace, Metaplace Industries sourced a specimen from a low-land tropical tree species, specifically Dipterocarpaceae, indigenous to Central Indonesia. This particular piece of petrified wood is estimated to be approximately 22 million years old, underscoring the deep historical connection integrated into the design. The petrified wood trunk rests upon a custom-designed concrete base, which features a hollow core. This core ingeniously houses a low-voltage natural gas burner, offering convenient control through either a remote control or Bluetooth connectivity, blending ancient material with modern technology.
Nick Wray, the founder of Metaplace Industries, articulates the company's philosophy: “Metaplace draws its inspiration from the world’s wonder and beauty. It’s petrified wood, millions of years in the making, a wood that is stone, a material that is as mysterious and alluring as a polished gem, and yet built to provide the perfect hearth that truly could last for millions of years without ever losing its luster.” This statement highlights the reverence for natural processes and the ambition to create enduring, timeless pieces.
Beyond its aesthetic and functional contributions, Metaplace Industries is committed to social responsibility. In recognition of Indonesia as the primary source for the petrified wood used in their creations, 2% of the net profits generated from the sale of 'ascendance' fireplaces will be donated to Direct Relief International. This non-profit organization is dedicated to assisting Indonesian children residing in areas of extreme poverty, providing a philanthropic dimension to the company's operations. The 'ascendance' fireplace represents a fusion of ancient natural history, contemporary design, and a commitment to global community support.
