Traditional Czechoslovakian glassmakers handcraft these multifaceted glass crystal light fixtures
Bomma, a glassmaking company, merges traditional Czechoslovakian glassmaking with modern technology to create unique light fixtures and decorative interior elements. This craft, originating centuries ago in East Bohemia, Czech Republic, is preserved and advanced by master craftsmen working alongside contemporary machinery. Bomma's latest line of fixtures, designed by talents from Dechem Studio, studio deFORM, and Rückl, including Ota Svoboda, draws inspiration from the irregular forms found in nature.
The artisans at Bomma process six tons of refined, extra-clear crystal daily to contribute to their eighteen collections of light fixtures. A significant initiative, the Constellations project, utilizes five distinct glass crystal compositions, configuring them into bespoke lighting arrangements. These collections showcase a blend of artistic vision and meticulous craftsmanship.
The Pyrite collection, named after the mineral, is characterized by its cubic structure. Glassmakers describe the process as blowing molten organic substance into a precise cold form, resulting in a light fixture with an elemental yet perfect shape. The hand-blown crystal cube features a gleaming surface, enclosed on three sides by a polished metal component available in silver or gold tones, highlighting the mineral's aesthetic.
The Dark & Bright Star collection aims to evoke the appearance of a starry night sky, offering an elegant approach to home lighting. Each mouth-blown piece incorporates a light source within, which functions as the shining core of a precisely cut crystal star, creating a textured and luminous effect reminiscent of celestial bodies.
Continuing with a whimsical theme, the Soap Mini collection features an asymmetrical array of raindrop-shaped glass light bulbs. When grouped, these bulbs are designed to resemble irregular, cartoon-like clusters of soap bubbles. Each piece is hand-blown without a mold, ensuring that every fixture is unique in both shape and color, emphasizing individuality.
Bomma's Lens collection is described as hypnotic, featuring bulbous glass coverings and shaded color tones. This collection is defined by two convex lens coverings that encapsulate the light source, creating a symphony of reflections. The design focuses on the interplay of light and glass to produce a captivating visual experience.
In collaboration with Rückl, Bomma's sister brand, the Metamorphosis collection combines the hand-cut crystal artistry of Rückl with Bomma's technical solutions and light constellation principles. This partnership results in fixtures with snakeskin-like textures, shaped like Chinese lanterns. Available in muted tones such as black, amber, and white, the Metamorphosis collection is designed to enhance mood lighting within an interior space. These collections collectively underscore Bomma's commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship while innovating for contemporary design needs.
