The Low-Maintenance Hanging Basket Flower That Can Take The Heat And Adds Beauty To Your Patio
Gardening enthusiasts often face the challenge of maintaining hanging baskets, especially those exposed to full sun, due to the rapid drying of soil. A viable solution lies in selecting drought-tolerant flowers. Among these, trailing ice plants (Lampranthus spectabilis) stand out for their aesthetic appeal and resilience to heat. These southern African succulents are commonly utilized as groundcovers but prove equally effective when incorporated into hanging baskets, offering a low-maintenance option that introduces distinctive color and texture. Unlike more common heat-tolerant trailing plants such as petunias, trailing ice plants provide a unique visual element that can differentiate one's garden from others.
Trailing ice plants are available in a spectrum of colors, including vibrant pinks and whites, complemented by gray-green foliage. Beyond their visual appeal, they also serve to attract butterflies, contributing to garden biodiversity. A significant advantage of these plants is their prolonged blooming period, which extends from early summer to mid-fall in cooler climates. However, their sensitivity to freezing temperatures typically relegates them to annual cultivation in USDA zones 8 and northward. When designing a container garden, a widely accepted formula involves incorporating a 'thriller,' a 'spiller,' and a 'filler.' Trailing ice plants, as their name suggests, fulfill the 'spiller' role and, as they spread, can also contribute to the 'filler' aspect. Their daisy-like flowers can reach heights exceeding 12 inches.
Effective care for trailing ice plants hinges on providing well-drained soil. It is advisable to amend standard potting soil with materials like perlite, coarse sand, or pumice to enhance drainage. Alternatively, using a specialized succulent potting mix can simplify the process. Proper drainage is crucial for these plants, but with this condition met, their flowers and succulent leaves will effortlessly enrich hanging baskets with color and texture. Given their preference for dry soil, careful consideration should be given to companion planting. Rose moss (Portulaca grandiflora) is an excellent choice, as it shares similar preferences for poor soil conditions and full sun, and its succulent, rose-like appearance complements the desert aesthetic introduced by the trailing ice plant.
Other drought-tolerant flowers can also be considered for hanging baskets to create diverse and resilient displays. Regular monitoring of soil moisture is essential for these plants. Watering is necessary when the top few inches of soil are dry or when cracks begin to appear on the surface. The plants themselves provide visual cues, such as droopy or shriveled leaves, indicating a need for water. It is important to remember that soil in hanging baskets tends to dry out more quickly than in ground beds, necessitating more frequent watering even for drought-tolerant species like the trailing ice plant. Adhering to these care guidelines will help ensure a vibrant and low-maintenance floral display throughout the warmer months.
