New Dining Chairs Bring Support and Comfort to the Table
The year 2020 ushered in a new era for dining chairs, moving beyond simple wooden structures to offer a blend of support and comfort. Designers have focused on creating dining chairs that are soft, round, and welcoming, aiming to extend the concept of comfort typically found in living room furniture to the dining area. This shift resulted in pieces that are both comfortable and architectural, suitable for both residential and contract spaces. The designs frequently feature round forms and light structures, which conceal intricate designs and meticulous stylistic craftsmanship. Balancing the weight of backrests and bases, these chairs incorporate rich details that highlight exquisite artisanship through careful seams and refined formal elements, ultimately enhancing the aesthetic appeal of any dining table.
Several prominent brands have introduced innovative dining chair designs that embody this new philosophy. Billiani's 'Corolla,' designed by Cristina Celestino, features a shell that embraces like a flower bud. Its rounded volumes and armrests are complemented by a wooden base, a signature of the company's style. The design incorporates an undulating line reminiscent of fashion, with upholstered details that shine through color and texture pairings between the structure and cushions. Moroso, with Patricia Urquiola's 'GetLucky,' offers an essential, compact, yet distinctive dining chair. This piece, along with its counterpart 'Ruff,' is characterized by its minimalist form. A soft, enveloping backrest, akin to a decorative bow, continuously weaves around the back, inviting one to sit. Its precise lines and geometric forms reflect the Spanish designer’s graceful touch.
Porro’s 'Romby,' a collaboration with Danish-Italian duo GamFratesi, translates the simple geometric figure of a rhombus into a three-dimensional, swiveling dining chair without armrests. Its geometric allure is highlighted by the combination of catalog cladding textures and the materiality of a conic wooden base. Lema introduces the 'Lucylle' family of seating by Roberto Lazzeroni, which showcases a refined line with vintage undertones. This collection includes a dining chair with armrests, featuring classical lines and balanced proportions. It boasts a solid ash structure and soft upholstery available in fabric, leather, or eco-leather, with repeated seams emphasizing the company's sartorial quality. Cappellini's 'Juli' family, designed by Werner Aisslinger, expands with the 'Juli Comfort' and 'Juli Soft' variants. These chairs feature an external plastic body, available in various tones, softened by an upholstered inner shell in diverse fabrics or leathers, making them versatile for both domestic and contract use.
Riflessi presents 'Nova,' designed by CarlesiTonelli Studio, available in four versions. This chair perfectly balances style and pragmatism, featuring an elegant polyurethane foam body on painted metal legs that conceal ergonomic design. Aesthetic influences from the 1930s and geometric details shape the seat's linear and curved profiles. Finally, Minotti's 'Torii Dining' chair, designed by Nendo Design, plays with rounded volumes, varying thicknesses, and the apparent simplicity of an intricate design. As part of the Torii family, this dining chair stands out with its tall, round profiles. Its backrest, with a reduced thickness, is adorned with vertical slatted seams and a cord along the padding's perimeter, emphasizing its couture craftsmanship.
