Make sure you know all these bathroom trends in 2024
The average American spends a significant amount of time in the bathroom, making it a crucial space for comfort and relaxation. This article, referencing insights from the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) in December 2023, outlines the top bathroom trends anticipated for 2024, focusing on features that enhance serenity and functionality.
Toilet trends for 2024 emphasize universal design and smart technology. Comfort-height toilets, meeting ADA standards, are gaining popularity. Smart toilets feature functionalities like self-cleaning mechanisms after each flush, heated seats, and automatic lids. Water-conserving toilets and smart bidet seats are also prominent. The design of water closets is evolving, with options including both enclosed and open spaces.
In terms of tubs and showers, freestanding and soaking tubs are expected to be the most sought-after styles, with oval shapes leading the design. Rochelle Horn, CKBD, CLIPP, Sales Consultant and Designer at Rosie Right | Design. Build. Remodel., notes a high demand for freestanding tubs and large, spa-like showers that promote a sense of tranquility. Showers and tubs will integrate touchpad controls, body sprays, and jets, alongside wet rooms with steam capabilities and expanded shower sizes.
Vanity designs are moving towards increased organization and practicality. Marble and marble-like surfaces, extending to backsplashes, are favored for their ease of cleaning. Vanities will include integrated power outlets and personalized storage solutions such as individual storage units with partitions or drawer dividers.
Personalization through integrated technology is a key trend. This includes app and keypad controls for water features, individualized vanities with built-in outlets, adjustable floor temperatures, and smart mirrors, toilets, and showers. For aging-in-place customization, features like easy-to-use faucets, zero-transition showers, and grab bars are becoming standard.
Maximizing space is a significant consideration. This can involve removing bathtubs to create larger shower areas or expanding the primary bathroom footprint by connecting it to the closet or dressing area. Popular designs will feature separate showers and tubs, with the standalone tub acting as a luxurious design element.
Lighting is transforming with 100% LED lighting becoming the standard. Trends include lighting within medicine cabinets and mirrors, statement lighting in primary bathrooms, customizable mood lighting presets for different times of day, and floor/path lighting for both aesthetics and safety. Advanced lighting controls, such as mobile device connectivity, local dimmers and switches, motion-sensor lighting, and programmable settings, are in high demand.
Colors and patterns will feature contemporary, modern, and mid-century designs, often incorporating large-format tiles or slabs in showers and tub surrounds. Clean lines will be complemented by pops of color and contrast using tile, wallpaper, paint, and unique vanities. Sherwin-Williams’ 2024 Color of the Year, Upward SW 6239, is highlighted as an example of current color preferences. Homeowners are seeking a relaxing oasis with organic and natural design themes, connecting to the outdoors. Layered natural wood tones, earthy greens, and warmer whites will be prominent, along with wallpaper and specialty wall treatments. Rochelle Horn mentions the popularity of patterns on floors and walls, and metallic finishes like gold and matte black, with polished nickel also being a personal favorite.
Grout lines are becoming minimal, with small or no visible grout in bath flooring, featuring patterned and textured tiles. This trend offers practical benefits by minimizing upkeep and cleaning, improving usability for aging in place, and seamlessly blending into the overall design. Popular flooring materials include ceramic and porcelain tile, luxury vinyl wood plank, and luxury vinyl tile. Large-format, plank, and patterned mosaic surfaces (such as hex, chevron, or herringbone) in warm neutrals and muted earth and wood tones are expected.
Sustainability is an important aspect, with designs incorporating separate shower controls for water flow and pressure adjustment, VOC-free paints and stains, 100% LED lighting, EPA Water Sense low-flow toilets and faucets, electric radiant flooring, and flooring made from recycled materials. High-performance low-E windows and doors, and alternative energy-efficient water heaters are also part of sustainable bathroom design.
