Lighting is most important element in design: Egyptian Designer Hisham Mahdy
Hisham Mahdy, a prominent Egyptian designer, Chief Designer of Mental Flame Interiors, and CEO of Cairo Design Awards, emphasizes the critical role of lighting in design. He considers lighting the most vital element among various design aspects, including forms, colors, and materials. Mahdy explains that lighting and colors collaborate to accentuate any design, while forms contribute to its distinctiveness. He highlights that design elements, once fixed, contribute to a designer's unique language.
Mahdy discusses a recent challenging project with the German-Lebanese Company for Industry (GLC Paints), where he was given complete creative freedom without a traditional client brief. In this project, he adopted the retro-futurism style, a contemporary movement that reimagines the future through a past lens. This style combines elements of futurism, which historically focused on technological advancements and their impact, with retro interior design, characterized by an eclectic blend of old and new forms, materials, and finishes. The absence of a brief made the project particularly demanding, as he had to create a design solely based on promoting a new color palette.
When selecting colors, Mahdy prioritizes the desired mood for a space. He generally opts for reduced color contrast to foster a comfortable environment. However, for designs requiring prominence or a more captivating appeal, he strategically employs contrasting colors to infuse an energetic and interesting mood. Conversely, he utilizes analogous colors, which are adjacent on the color wheel, to evoke a calm and cozy atmosphere, particularly suitable for settings like beach houses.
The GLC Paints project, focused on launching their "Colour Trends 202" with 24 new shades, was a significant undertaking. This initiative involved leading architects and designers from Egypt and the Arab region to create innovative designs that reflected global environmental, social, and economic shifts. Mahdy's participation in this project exemplifies his innovative approach to design, particularly in situations where creative boundaries are expansive yet defined by a singular promotional objective.
