I, too, installed an open source garage door opener, and I’m loving it
This blog post details the author's experience with installing an open-source garage door opener called OpenGarage, motivated by issues with their existing proprietary Genie/Aladdin Connect system. The author, Kevin Purdy, was seeking better integration with his Home Assistant automation system, which the Genie app no longer supported after an API change and subsequent withdrawal of an official integration. The proprietary app also suffered from frequent security logouts and limited automation capabilities. Purdy considered the ratgdo system, which a colleague had successfully implemented, but found it incompatible with his specific garage door opener without additional modifications.
Purdy opted for the OpenGarage unit, a $50 open-source device consisting of a tiny ESP board with an ultrasonic distance sensor and a circuit relay. He highlights OpenGarage's fully open-source nature, encompassing hardware design, firmware, app code, and API, providing a high degree of control and customization. The installation process involved mounting the OpenGarage unit on the garage ceiling to allow its ultrasonic sensor to detect the door's position. This required finding an optimal placement that avoided obstructions and allowed for clear detection of the garage door and, optionally, a car's presence. The wiring involved connecting the OpenGarage's contact wires to the same ports on the garage door opener as the existing wall-mounted button, effectively mimicking its functionality.
After installation, the OpenGarage unit provides a web interface displaying the garage door's status, distance, Wi-Fi signal, and cloud connection status. Beyond basic control, OpenGarage offers versatile integration options. It can maintain a cloud connection to services like Blynk or OpenThings.io, connect via MQTT, or integrate with IFTTT. These capabilities enable advanced automations, such as receiving alerts if the garage door remains open for an extended period or after a certain time of day. For Purdy, the most significant advantage is its seamless integration with Home Assistant.
This integration allowed him to restore previous automations, such as turning on overhead lights when the garage door opens, and to explore new possibilities like reminders for trash day or potential NFC-triggered opening for convenience. Purdy also expresses appreciation for OpenGarage's indie, two-person development team, noting their dedication to open-source hardware and the inspiration they provide for DIY home control. The project, led by Ray Wang and Samer Albahra, evolved from the OpenSprinkler project, showcasing a commitment to accessible and customizable home automation solutions.
