Dabito’s Upholstered Breakfast Banquette Can Handle All the Spills
This article highlights how artist, interior designer, and Old Brand New founder Dabito, addressed the design challenges in his 860-square-foot New Orleans cottage. The primary objective was to create warm, inviting entertaining areas both indoors and outdoors, maximizing the limited floor space, and incorporating versatile, durable, and stylish furniture. Dabito's strategy involved using Sunbrella fabrics, traditionally known for their outdoor performance, in various parts of his home, including indoor spaces.
For the interior, Dabito identified a need for a dedicated dining area within the open-plan kitchen and living room. He designed a breakfast banquette along a wall separating the two rooms to create an intimate eating nook. He selected the 48-inch Coventry Bench from Ballard Designs and paired it with a concrete bistro table. To add a playful touch, he chose a lemon yellow and white cabana-stripe Sunbrella fabric for the upholstery. Dabito acknowledged the potential risk of using a fully upholstered piece in a high-traffic dining area but relied on Sunbrella's indoor performance textiles for their stain-resistant and easy-to-clean properties, ensuring durability against spills like chili sauce or red wine.
The exterior renovation focused on transforming a narrow strip of patchy grass in the backyard into a functional and inviting hangout space. Dabito extended the existing deck to meet the fence and stained it navy blue, aiming to create an outdoor area that felt like a seamless extension of the indoors. A modular teak sofa from Neighbor, upholstered in a neutral Sunbrella canvas fabric, became the centerpiece. Despite the common perception of white as impractical for outdoor furniture, Dabito specifically chose a white fabric to brighten the space, confident in Sunbrella’s weather-resistant, UV-resistant, fade-resistant, and stain-resistant qualities, which also contribute to a more sustainable design.
To accessorize the outdoor area, Dabito drew inspiration from his home's vibrant color palette, which includes pink siding, green floors, and blue shutters. He incorporated several statement pillows, all covered in Sunbrella fabrics, including a palm leaf design, a pink-and-gray diamond pattern, and a floral lumbar pillow. Additionally, two striped yellow and white pillows on banana-colored chairs echoed the banquette's fabric, creating a cohesive design. An all-weather rug by Sunbrella with monochromatic green stripes completed the outdoor transformation, resulting in a space that is bold, unique, and reflective of its inhabitants. The article concludes by showcasing specific Sunbrella fabric options, such as 'Sunbrella Tropics Jungle' and 'Sunbrella Welcome Guava,' highlighting their availability and versatility for design projects.
