During the unprecedented theater closures of the pandemic, Milanese architect Giulia Pellegrino initiated a transformative project for the dressing rooms of the Teatro degli Arcimboldi. This initiative, dubbed ‘Vietato L’Ingresso’ (meaning ‘entry forbidden’), was presented during Milan Design Week 2021 and aimed to revitalize the theater's backstage areas, which had fallen into disrepair. Pellegrino, collaborating with Show Bees and Teatro degli Arcimboldi Milano (TAM), invited 17 local design practices to reimagine the theater's dressing rooms. While the project did not mandate a direct connection to Vittorio Gregotti’s original architecture of the theater (built between 1997 and 2002), some designers spontaneously integrated elements that subtly referenced the theater's history or the surrounding Bicocca neighborhood. The pandemic's limitations, particularly concerning social gatherings and construction timelines, were addressed through meticulous planning, with the concept developed in April 2021, project deliveries in May, and construction commencing in June of the same year. Pellegrino emphasized the collaborative spirit and generosity of the designers, sponsors, and workers who contributed to the project. The aim was to make a strong and lasting gesture toward the performing arts sector by creating permanent, not temporary, settings for the artists.
