Come and Get It | Phillips de Pury Shop
Phillips de Pury & Company is opening a new shop at its 450 Park Avenue galleries, marking a significant expansion of its retail presence. The 600-square-foot space, designed by Markus Bergström and Joe Nunn of the London studio Glass Hill, features a flexible and modular shelving system constructed from black lacquered dowels and shelves. This new retail venture builds upon the success of two previous pop-up installations, 'Connectors' and 'The Projectory,' which were hosted at Phillips’s former temporary location at the Saatchi Gallery in London and also designed by Glass Hill.
While the previous pop-up installations focused primarily on contemporary design, the new permanent shop adopts a broader curatorial approach. According to Brent Dzekciorius, Phillips’s director of retail, the intention is to incorporate more art-related content, including photography, limited editions, contemporary art pieces, and artists’ books. This strategic shift aims to position the shop as a representative extension of Phillips’s role as a contemporary cultural arbiter, rather than solely a design retailer, especially given the limited space available for furniture.
Dzekciorius, known for his ability to identify emerging talent, has curated an intriguing selection of items for the inaugural collection. Highlights include the "Clock Clock" by the Stockholm studio Humans Since 1982, an innovative display of 24 analog clocks arranged to present time in a digital format. The same studio also contributes "Hair Clip on Hair," a piece that offers a commentary on religious dress codes for women. Other notable offerings include an arresting, graphic backgammon board created by artist Ara Peterson and his father, Jack; Ben Jones’s "Beehaven Ladder"; and Stephanie Solinas’s "Dominique Lambert Alaska Edition." The shop will also feature works by designers such as Study O Portable and Peter Marigold.
Adding to the prestige of the collection, Dzekciorius expressed satisfaction that three designers whose works are featured in the shop—Seongyong Lee, Nendo (whose "Thin Black Lines" series was previously exhibited at Phillips’s Saatchi space), and Max Lamb—have all received nominations for the Brit Insurance Design Awards. This recognition underscores the quality and innovation inherent in the chosen items, further solidifying the shop's commitment to showcasing leading contemporary design and art.
