This Translucent, Prefab Sauna Is the Perfect Backyard Addition
The Sydney-based art and architecture collective Studio Rain created an off-grid sauna installation called "Atmosphere: A Revival" for Melbourne Design Week 2020. This installation, situated along the Yarra River at The Old Alphington Swimming Pool, aimed to revive bathing culture in an area historically known for its swimming spots between the 1920s and 1960s. The sauna draws inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese bathing rituals, promoting well-being and fostering connections between city dwellers and nature. It is designed to accommodate six people within its 62-square-foot footprint.
The sauna's construction features a reclaimed cypress pine wood frame, western red cedar seating, and lightweight polycarbonate walls and roof. This combination of traditional and experimental materials allows natural light to enter the space while maintaining an intimate atmosphere. A low-swivel door, designed to prevent heat loss, adds a playful element to the experience. The space is heated to between 60 to 80 degrees Celsius (140 to 176 degrees Fahrenheit) by a traditional wood-fire stove from Sauna & Steam Australia. Fiber cement is used for fire-proofing near the stove and for the flooring throughout the structure.
To enhance the bathing experience and address the need for cooling off, the sauna's slanted roof collects rainwater runoff into a barrel. This collected water is then pumped to a bucket shower, which is strategically located on a refurbished diving board along the riverbank. The entire sauna unit is designed as a flat-pack system, allowing for easy disassembly, packing, and transportation. This modular design initially intended for the sauna to travel across Australia for various design weeks and ocean tide pools during winter.
However, due to the recent pandemic, the focus has shifted from public installations to private, standalone saunas for gardens or cabin properties. The positive reception to the prototype has led Studio Rain to collaborate with design-build firm Fresh Prince to offer a limited edition of made-to-order saunas. These include the original six-person model and smaller two-to-four-person versions. Studio Rain also provides custom, one-of-a-kind sauna designs for those seeking something unique.
Looking ahead, Studio Rain plans to revisit the concept of different residencies for their saunas to activate various swimming areas once the current crisis subsides. There is also an interest in collaborating with local councils to design permanent public saunas that would integrate with existing swimming facilities, especially given the lack of outdoor public saunas in scenic Australian landscapes compared to Scandinavian countries. This initiative also aims to encourage 'winter bathing' and activate Australia's waterways during colder months when water temperatures drop.
