Top wallpaper trends for 2017
In 2017, the wallpaper market presents a diverse range of designs catering to individual tastes rather than a single dominant trend. According to Fi Douglas, creative director and founder of Bluebellgray, people are embracing their unique preferences and fearlessly incorporating elements they truly love into their homes. Large-scale, mural-style designs are gaining popularity, viewed as art for walls that can dramatically alter a room's atmosphere, as exemplified by a cool and fun space created for a child's room using such a design. Bluebellgray's 'Big Rothesay' wallpaper, priced at £175, features a large-scale design created from three three-meter lengths.
Paula Taylor, Stylist at Graham & Brown, notes a growing boldness in the use of pattern and color. A softer pastel palette is being applied to new geometric patterns, lending a feminine touch to an otherwise masculine style, often enhanced with metallic highlights. Pattern clash and patchwork tiles are also emerging as popular choices for adding visual interest to any room, with inspiration often drawn from international influences like those found in Portugal. Taylor also expresses a personal fondness for trompe l'oeil effects, appreciating their ability to create three-dimensional illusions on flat surfaces.
Charlotte Cosby, Head of Creative at Farrow & Ball, observes that wallpapers have an enduring appeal, often evoking a sense of nostalgia through their colors and patterns. While trends in wallpaper designs fluctuate between patterns and stripes, the current movement is away from the clean, minimal interiors prevalent a decade ago. Homeowners now seek more personalized spaces that reflect their individual tastes and interests. Geometric wallpapers, in particular, are resonating with those aiming for a bold, fresh aesthetic. Cosby personally prefers large-scale patterns with texture and tone-on-tone colorways, finding them to offer a dynamic, modern, and graphic look.
David Mottershead, Managing Director at Little Greene, highlights that wallpaper designs can convey much about the owners' tastes and the heritage of their homes, effectively telling a story and infusing character. The increased interest in wallpaper is partly attributed to more people renovating their homes instead of moving. Current trends include pretty patterns, trails, birds, textures, and decadent shimmering finishes, often in large scales. Wallpaper is no longer confined to single feature walls, and there's a growing trend for contrasting skirting boards and painted woodwork in brighter, punchy hues, which effectively modernizes heritage patterns. Mottershead's personal preference leans towards dark, moody wallpapers that create a sense of opulence and depth, especially when paired with wood and deep-colored door frames. He also notes the increasing use of wallpaper in bathrooms and kitchens.
Ottoline De Vries, a designer, emphasizes the expansive variety available in contemporary wallpaper, ranging from classic and neutral to bohemian, bold, and artistic. Digital printing has revolutionized the industry, enabling innovative designs, unlimited color palettes, and unrestricted pattern sizes, resulting in brilliantly vibrant and large-scale creations. De Vries's personal preference is for colorful wallpapers that tell a story, particularly those that incorporate artistic elements.
