My DIY Outdoor Shower Cost $1,000 and Makes Me Feel Like a Million Bucks—Year-Round

The author recounts the process of building a year-round outdoor shower in their backyard in Central California for approximately $1,000. The decision to construct the shower was driven by the desire for a more luxurious bathing experience than typically available indoors, emphasizing the freeing nature of showering outdoors. The project began with finding an ideal location, prioritizing privacy, good natural light, and proximity to a water hookup, which led to a spot against a hedgerow near the bedroom. Initial design ideas ranged from minimalist to more elaborate, with inspiration drawn from Pinterest and Dwell's own website. The author decided on a custom design involving copper piping and a wooden backstop, sketching ideas to visualize the final product and visiting a local hardware store to select materials, opting for Douglas fir planks for the backstop after an initial attempt with redwood proved unsatisfactory. The construction process involved several key stages. First, the backstop was assembled using two planks with a small gap and secured with stakes. The area for the backstop required digging a foot and a half deep, filling half a foot with three-quarter-inch gravel to ensure proper drainage and prevent wood rot, and then pouring quickcrete to firmly set the planks. Levels were used to ensure the backstop was perfectly straight during this phase. Following the backstop's installation, a drainage pit was dug, measuring four by four feet and two feet deep, with a slight slope for efficient water runoff. This pit was lined with landscaping fabric to prevent sediment from clogging the gravel, which was then filled and tamped down. For the shower floor, the author initially chose an oversized flagstone slab that proved impractical due to its weight and dimensions, leading to a second trip to the stone yard for a more suitable Arizona peach slab. This second slab was correctly sized to allow water to drain into the pit and was positioned beneath where the water would fall. The building of the shower fixture involved custom copper piping. The author learned soldering techniques through online videos but noted that push-to-fit connectors could be an alternative for those avoiding soldering. Key components included a spigot for feet washing, a single on/off valve, and a 10-inch showerhead purchased from Etsy. The fixture was designed to connect to a garden hose, with plans for a tankless water heater for year-round use. The final stage involved installing a tankless water heater to accommodate colder weather. After researching various options, a Gasland 16-liter tankless heater, designed for outdoor use and propane-powered, was selected for its temperature and flow controls and ease of installation and removal. The heater quickly warms water, outperforming the indoor system. Finishing touches included decorating the area with rocks and plants, and repurposing an outdoor metal table for toiletries. The project, completed for approximately $1,000, transformed the backyard into a luxurious, functional space, offering both refreshing cool showers in summer and warm showers in colder months, enhancing the overall living experience. #DIYProject #OutdoorShower #HomeImprovement #BackyardDesign #TanklessWaterHeater #CopperPiping #LandscapeDesign #HomeRenovation #BudgetFriendly #DIYProject #OutdoorShower #HomeImprovement #BackyardDesign #TanklessWaterHeater #CopperPiping #LandscapeDesign #HomeRenovation #BudgetFriendly
