Green is paying off for Petri Plumbing & Heating
Mike Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing & Heating, a Brooklyn-based company, has successfully integrated high-efficiency, eco-friendly plumbing systems into the core of his business despite numerous challenges. Petri Plumbing & Heating, a fifth-generation family business established in 1906, serves Brooklyn and Manhattan with a team of nine to ten employees and six service trucks. Mike Petri's early adoption of green plumbing practices positioned him ahead of the industry curve, requiring patience until technology, customer acceptance, and government regulations caught up.
Operating in New York City presents unique obstacles to green initiatives, such as the difficulty of solar applications due to climate and tall buildings, the near impossibility of geothermal installations due to building density and high land values, and landmark regulations that complicate even basic venting. Furthermore, a significant portion of his customer base initially exhibited cost-averse behavior towards more expensive green solutions. Petri's commitment to eco-friendly systems stems from a fascination with the technology, a desire to differentiate his company, and a genuine environmental concern.
Petri encountered early frustrations with nascent green technologies, such as the initial 1.6 GPF toilets in the 1990s, which were inefficient and often poorly designed despite rebate programs. He also frequently encountered issues with plumbers who installed green systems incorrectly, leading to decreased efficiency and customer dissatisfaction, ultimately requiring his company to rectify these mistakes. The most significant challenge has been public apathy towards energy and water conservation, compounded by the higher initial costs of green plumbing systems, especially in the wake of economic downturns like the Great Recession.
To overcome these hurdles, Petri prioritizes continuous education for his staff, emphasizing the understanding and effective selling of high-efficiency equipment and its benefits to clients. His company holds certifications and memberships that align with its green business model, including Green Plumbers USA, which educates plumbers on their environmental role, and WaterSense certification from the EPA, covering faucets, fixtures, and appliances. While water conservation awareness is lower on the East Coast compared to regions like California, customers become acutely aware of water costs when facing unexpected high bills due to leaks.
Petri Plumbing is also Lead-Safe Certified through another EPA partnership, offering water testing and purification solutions, a service gaining importance due to concerns over water quality, exemplified by events like the Flint, Michigan crisis and New York City’s aging water infrastructure. Beyond educating his technicians, Petri actively educates his customers on the proper use of new systems, such as tankless water heaters, explaining that efficiency benefits depend on mindful usage. He also informs clients about available government incentives and rebates, like the $500 for converting to an 83% efficient boiler or $300 for installing an indirect water heater, helping to offset initial investment costs. Petri observes a growing awareness, particularly among younger generations, and foresees a promising future for the green plumbing sector as products improve, costs decrease, and installation processes become simpler.
