Designers Say These 5 Trends Will Be Everywhere This Fall—But This One Is Officially Out
As summer transitions to fall, a shift in focus from outdoor to indoor spaces naturally occurs, prompting a desire for comfort and warmth within homes. This seasonal change also ushers in new interior design trends. Identifying which trends to embrace can be challenging, but insights from design experts Denine Jackson of Denine Jackson Interiors and Kim Lapin of Kim Lapin Interiors highlight five dominant trends for the upcoming fall season, alongside one longstanding trend that is receding in popularity.
Rich color palettes are poised to make a significant impact this fall. Moving away from the bright hues of summer, the season welcomes deep, luxurious tones such as plum and burgundy. These colors are being integrated into various elements like wallpaper, paint, and fabrics, creating warm and intimate atmospheres. Mustard yellow emerges as a key accent color, complementing the autumnal inspiration drawn directly from nature's changing leaves. This emphasis on rich, natural tones is a hallmark of the season's aesthetic.
Another trend gaining traction is the use of hand-painted finishes, moving beyond the minimalist furniture designs that have been prevalent. Kim Lapin notes an increase in charming, folksy detailing on cabinetry and millwork, incorporating hand-painted designs. This trend encourages personal expression through interiors, with options like hand-finished florals, abstract patterns, or striped designs, all contributing to a customized, collected, and unique feel within a space.
Vintage-inspired patterns are also making a comeback, signifying a departure from subtle, minimalist designs. Denine Jackson observes a preference for bold and expressive patterns, specifically mentioning the successful combination of Art Deco motifs and large-format Victorian florals. This inclination towards dramatic patterns reflects a desire among homeowners to inject more personality and meaning into their homes, moving away from generic and safe neutral aesthetics.
Dramatic marble finishes are set to be a luxury material this fall, evolving from the traditional white and gray veining. The focus shifts to richer marbles such as Calacatta Viola and green marble, characterized by bold, striking veining. These opulent marble types are being applied in various high-impact areas, including kitchen islands, backsplashes, and fireplace surrounds, transforming them into focal points of living spaces. Sculptural accessories made from these dramatic marbles also contribute to the elevated aesthetic.
Finally, silvery metallic accents are gaining prominence over the previously dominant golden-toned metallics like brass. While metallics remain a staple in home decor, Kim Lapin notes a growing preference for shinier, silver-hued metals such as polished nickel and chrome. These cool-toned metals introduce a crisp, modern edge that beautifully contrasts with more ornate or traditional design elements, adding visual interest and contemporary flair to any room. Conversely, the all-white interior trend, often featuring white shiplap and white oak accents, is declining. Designers agree that this look, whether in modern farmhouse or West Coast modern styles, is perceived as flat and generic. There is a collective craving for more personality, richness, and layered, elevated designs that offer greater meaning and individuality.
