Clever Disguises for Ugly Garbage Cans Boost Curb Appeal in Brooklyn Front Yards
Brooklyn residents often face the challenge of storing garbage bins in limited outdoor spaces, an issue that can detract significantly from a home's curb appeal. Unsightly trash containers and overflowing refuse can create a negative first impression, despite efforts to beautify front stoops and gardens. This article explores various innovative solutions for concealing garbage cans, many of which offer the additional benefit of deterring rodents.
One creative approach is demonstrated by Brooklyn Heights gardener Serhiy Mshanetskiy, who developed a "live hanging wall curtain." At the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse, Mshanetskiy constructed a three-tiered system of flower boxes above an existing garbage bin. These boxes are filled with ivy, vinca vine, evergreens, white begonia, cyclamen, and peace lilies, creating a lush green veil that almost entirely hides the trash cans. Mshanetskiy designed the planters using treated wood, lined with water-resistant fabric, and incorporated drainage holes that direct water to an existing pipe. While these plant canopies enhance aesthetics by replacing an unattractive view with a vibrant floral display, they do not inherently solve rat problems. The cost for such custom plant curtains varies, as Mshanetskiy charges by the hour based on the size and complexity of the installation.
Another popular solution comes from CitiBin, a company founded by Liz Picarazzi, a Park Slope resident. CitiBin offers modular trash enclosures made from aluminum and recycled bamboo composite, which are becoming increasingly common in Brooklyn. Picarazzi spent several years researching and perfecting her designs, aiming to create an attractive enclosure that fits seamlessly into brownstone and urban environments, unlike the "mini barns" she observed. CitiBins are available in two sizes, accommodating standard 44-gallon round cans or larger wheeled cans. They also offer an optional built-in planter on top. A standard two-module CitiBin starts at $2,850, with installation costs ranging from $250 to $450. These bins come in three colors, feature stainless steel hinges and hydraulic arms for slow closing hatches, are designed to withstand harsh weather, require minimal maintenance, and are marketed as rat-proof.
Metrobox, based in Sunset Park, provides a different aesthetic with rust-proof aluminum enclosures powder-coated in black. Co-owner Julio Lio developed Metrobox after struggling to find an appealing trash storage solution for his own Brooklyn Heights rental property. He recognized the need for an attractive option beyond plastic enclosures or expensive custom builds. Metrobox units are designed to fit brownstone front yards and can be moved if placed over a hatch. Each Metrobox is lined with vinyl, has an aluminum floor plate, holds two 32-gallon trash cans, and comes fully assembled for $1,000. These enclosures were initially targeted at the local neighborhood market.
For those seeking a fully customizable option, woodworkers like Steve Rayboy of Urban Exteriors craft solid wood enclosures. Rayboy specializes in custom-fitting bins to specific spaces. He primarily uses knotty cedar due to its affordability and workability. His designs typically include front and top doors and an open bottom. The cost for labor and materials for his wooden bins ranges from $2,000 to $3,000. While offering a natural aesthetic, these wooden bins require periodic maintenance, such as touch-ups with a sealer every few years, to prevent rotting, in contrast to metal options that might rust but are generally more durable. These diverse options provide Brooklyn residents with effective and aesthetically pleasing ways to manage garbage storage while enhancing their home's curb appeal.
