10 Questions With… Dan Brunn

Dan Brunn, an architect born in Tel Aviv and now based in Los Angeles, discusses the influences on his work, his career trajectory, and current projects. He arrived in Los Angeles at age seven but maintains strong connections to his Bauhaus-rich native city, which he describes as having profoundly influenced his design aesthetic. Brunn's childhood home, with its terrazzo floors, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, and open floor plan, laid the foundation for his residential design approach, which he continues to apply today. He notes Tel Aviv's evolution into an international hub with a strong design lineage and culinary scene. Moving to Los Angeles, Brunn developed an admiration for mid-century classic architects like Richard Neutra, Craig Ellwood, and Pierre Koening, the latter of whom taught at USC during Brunn's studies. He credits LA with allowing him to push boundaries and blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces, characterizing the city as young and striving. Brunn reveals his ambition to become an architect began at age seven, spurred by playing with Legos, with an alternative aspiration to be a musician. His musical inclination stemmed from his parents' love for The Beatles, piano lessons, and later, picking up the guitar, which led to writing music and forming bands. He highlights his use of Bone Structure, an innovative building system that functions like a life-sized Erector set. This system involves factory-fabricated steel posts and beams that are assembled on-site with screws, resulting in an all-steel structure with minimal waste, which he is employing for his new home in West Los Angeles. Regarding recent work, Brunn mentions completing the Road to Awe boutique and the upcoming opening of Coffee for Sasquatch, his first coffee shop. He also renovated a mid-century house by Edward Fickett for Pharrell's manager, Caron Veazey, and has a courtyard house in the Hollywood Hills in the pipeline. He recently launched the Hedy Bench, a limited-edition art piece. Brunn expresses the most pride in his "Flip Flop House," his first beach house, which he undertook early in his career and considers the project that launched it. His current design obsession is wrapping spaces in wood, while his pet peeve is the prevalence of the faux industrial look. Brunn's favorite paint color is Guards Red by Porsche. He prefers picture books and Instagram over Pinterest for inspiration. The most recently downloaded app on his phone is Mixer, a private network for creatives. He greatly admires the Miller House by Alexander Girard, particularly its exquisite interiors and use of color, noting that the design principles—a clean space of white, well-thought-out natural light, and splashes of color—continue to influence his firm's work. His dream commission would be designing a museum or a spiritual space. Ultimately, Brunn finds the best aspect of his job to be the ability to positively impact people's lives daily, feeling fortunate to realize his dreams through his profession. #DanBrunn #Architecture #InteriorDesign #LosAngelesDesign #TelAvivInfluence #MidCenturyModern #BoneStructure #ArchitecturalProjects #DesignPhilosophy #DanBrunn #Architecture #InteriorDesign #LosAngelesDesign #TelAvivInfluence #MidCenturyModern #BoneStructure #ArchitecturalProjects #DesignPhilosophy
