7 Nursery Design Rules To Follow, According to Interior Designers

Designing a nursery for an expectant parent can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience. To ease this process, top interior designers offer seven key rules. The initial step involves establishing a color scheme. While neutral palettes have been popular, vibrant colors and patterns are making a comeback. Pinterest can be a valuable resource for inspiration. A trend towards gender-neutral nurseries, utilizing tones like creams and greens, offers flexibility for future children and aligns with current design trends. Green, in particular, is highlighted as a popular color. Incorporating an accent wall, often featuring board and batten detailing or textured wallpapers like grasscloth, is another popular design element that adds character. Interior designers emphasize the importance of designing a nursery with longevity in mind, suggesting a sophisticated and timeless approach that allows the child to grow with the room. This includes choosing furniture that can transition beyond infancy, such as dressers that can be adapted into changing tables and convertible cribs. Such choices are not only cost-effective in the long run but also environmentally conscious. Safety is paramount in nursery design. Adhering to age and usage recommendations for furniture, using wall anchors for stability, and following safe sleep guidelines are crucial. The article highlights the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which prohibits crib bumper pads and inclined sleepers. It also advises against placing stuffed animals, blankets, or pillows in the crib with a sleeping baby, aligning with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. There's also a growing focus on eco-friendly design, with a preference for natural materials like 100% cotton. Lighting plays a significant role in creating a safe and cozy atmosphere. Designers recommend installing cordless, blackout Roman shades and positioning the rocker near a window for natural light during feeding, while keeping the crib away from windows to prevent sleep disturbances. Adjustable brightness lighting sources are also suggested to adapt to a baby's sleep regimen. Finally, strategic budgeting is advised, with designers recommending splurging on a comfortable glider or rocking chair due to the significant time parents will spend there. Conversely, saving money on decor is suggested, as a baby's preferences and room phases change quickly. Affordable decor options include vintage finds, Etsy, and repurposing existing home items to personalize the nursery without excessive spending. These guidelines aim to help parents create a functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing nursery space. #NurseryDesign #InteriorDesign #BabyRoom #HomeDecor #GenderNeutralNursery #ChildSafety #NurseryFurniture #ColorPalette #EcoFriendlyDesign #NurseryDesign #InteriorDesign #BabyRoom #HomeDecor #GenderNeutralNursery #ChildSafety #NurseryFurniture #ColorPalette #EcoFriendlyDesign
