Kit Kemp’s New York cafe offers a lesson in bold patterns and embroidered details

Kit Kemp, the Founder and Creative Director of Firmdale Hotels, has reimagined the Palette cafe within New York's Bergdorf Goodman, transforming it into a vibrant and imaginative space. Her design philosophy, characterized by a mastery of opulent color and layered textiles, is evident throughout the newly renovated restaurant. The article delves into five key design principles observed in the Palette cafe that can be adapted for home interiors. Firstly, Kemp advocates for the bold application of patterns, demonstrating this by using her 'Live it Up' weave for Christopher Farr on banquette seating. This stripe fabric is chosen for its versatility with various colors, high martindale rating for durability, and low maintenance. For the chairs, 'Moon' fabrics in a wool weave were selected, with a unique Palette motif cut into the chair backs, subtly echoing the restaurant's name. Kemp emphasizes balancing one large-scale fabric with smaller geometric and fine stripe patterns to create a bold yet harmonious interior. Secondly, the design incorporates a playful and atmospheric mural. The 'Tall Trees' mural extends from the walls onto the ceiling, meeting a central coffer to create an immersive and elegant environment. This custom-made feature adds individuality and intrigue, offering a comforting and enveloping atmosphere, particularly effective as a hallway idea. Thirdly, the article highlights the importance of handcrafted embroidered details. In the Palette cafe, embroidered vines and flowers introduce a subtle 3D effect and an additional layer of design complexity, described as handmade, handcrafted, and psychedelic. Kemp suggests that such embroidered pieces could be framed in large Perspex boxes to create exclusive wall art at home, noting how these handmade elements command attention within the room. Fourthly, the concept of curating a gallery wall on a shelf is presented. Contrasting yellow shelves are used to display different shaped picture frames, which can be rearranged randomly. This method is praised for its neat appearance, with all items on the same level despite varying sizes, and as a practical solution for hanging pictures. The idea of using a design thread of similar, interesting, or seasonal articles on shelves is also suggested for added fun. Finally, Kemp encourages wallpapering ceilings. The Palette cafe features a blue night sky with stars on the inside of its coffered ceiling, complemented by 'Rockin Robin'-designed light hanging mobiles. This technique creates a magical space. Kemp applies color to ceilings in various settings, including staircases and rooms with beautifully figured ceilings and moldings. She notes that paint is an easier starting point for an all-around 'shoebox effect,' but expresses a preference for wallpapering ceilings in upstairs spaces with lower or angled walls. The article concludes by inviting readers to experience the Palette cafe in NYC, suggesting its design elements can inspire home dining room ideas. #InteriorDesign #KitKemp #PaletteCafe #BergdorfGoodman #BoldPatterns #EmbroideredDetails #MuralDesign #GalleryWall #CeilingWallpaper #InteriorDesign #KitKemp #PaletteCafe #BergdorfGoodman #BoldPatterns #EmbroideredDetails #MuralDesign #GalleryWall #CeilingWallpaper
