With No Entryway Closet to Speak Of, I Asked Pro Organizers to Fix My Coat Clutter

The author of this article, Julie Vadnal, lives in a Brooklyn apartment with her husband that lacks adequate closet space, especially for winter coats. Despite high ceilings and a renovated kitchen, their apartment features only two small, 3x3 single-door closets for all their clothing. This inadequacy leads to a chaotic situation where coats and jackets are strewn across dining room chairs, draped over bedroom doors, or hung on an over-the-door rack in the home office, indicating a clear absence of a dedicated storage solution. Faced with mounting coat clutter, Vadnal sought the advice of professional organizers Rachel Rosenthal of Rachel and Co. and Shira Gill, author of 'Organized Living.' Both experts were presented with the apartment's organizational challenges via FaceTime, where Vadnal showcased the various 'drop zones' for their outerwear. Their consultations provided practical strategies for managing the coat situation without an entryway closet. The first piece of advice from both Rosenthal and Gill emphasized the necessity of decluttering. Rosenthal pointed out that with only seven days in a week, most people repeatedly wear the same coats, suggesting that a significant portion of Vadnal's outerwear might be unnecessary. She recommended gathering all jackets into one pile to take inventory, which led Vadnal to identify and discard two fleeces and a puffer jacket that were rarely worn or aesthetically unappealing. Gill reinforced this by stating that it's impossible to make a large volume of coats look organized, especially when they need to be stored visibly. The second strategy involved optimizing the placement of frequently used items. Vadnal's existing setup had her coats on the back of the office door, requiring her to traverse the entire apartment to remove them. Rosenthal suggested relocating the coats to the back of the bedroom door, a more central location that significantly reduces the distance from the front door. The items previously on the bedroom door, such as purses and hair accessories, which are used less frequently, could then be moved to the now-empty office door. Finally, the organizers advocated for the use of hooks. Shira Gill, in particular, expressed a strong preference for hooks, providing a list of her favorites. Vadnal attempted to install hooks on a narrow wall near the apartment entrance, but found that bulky outerwear made this impractical. Instead, she adopted over-the-door hooks for her bedroom door. Rosenthal advised maintaining this system year-round by hanging lighter jackets there during spring and summer, ensuring continuous organization regardless of the season. The article concludes by listing several recommended hook products, including the Perkins Hook Rail, Swedish Utility Hook Rail, Dots Set by Muuto, and SIN Leggy Long Wall Hook, suggesting practical solutions for readers facing similar challenges. #ClosetOrganization #SmallSpaceSolutions #HomeOrganization #ProfessionalOrganizer #Decluttering #ApartmentLiving #StorageSolutions #EntrywayAlternatives #ClosetOrganization #SmallSpaceSolutions #HomeOrganization #ProfessionalOrganizer #Decluttering #ApartmentLiving #StorageSolutions #EntrywayAlternatives
