Interior designer Thayná Alves transformed basic white IKEA Lack shelves into a unique decorative feature for a musician's home office. Alves sourced six different colors of climbing rope from a local REI store, noting that outdoor supply stores often provide a wider variety of colors and thicker materials compared to general hardware stores. The entire modification process for the shelves took approximately one hour. The project involved creating decorative, non-functional brackets using the climbing rope, giving the shelves a distinctive, shoelace-inspired upgrade. The supplies required for this DIY project include an IKEA Lack shelf, climbing cord, a drill, circular metal rings, two spring links, two cup hooks, hot glue, scissors, and painter’s tape. The first step involves setting up the shelf's original bracket onto the wall studs and attaching the shelf to ensure proper alignment. Two cup hooks are then screwed into the wall above the shelf, from which the spring links are hung. The shelf itself is temporarily removed from its hardware. The next critical step is to carefully drill four holes, one in each corner, through the shelf. A generous amount of cord is pulled through to reach the spring link and feed back through the other set of holes. This process is repeated for both sides of the shelf.
