Lobo Marinho x Monocle 5th Collaboration: The Porto Side Table

Astet Studio has brought the essence of Malaga's coast to Madrid with their sea-inspired interior design for the Lobito de Mar restaurant. The 4,700-square-foot space, designed by Barcelona-based Astet Studio, intricately weaves maritime themes throughout its various sections, from the ground floor to the basement dining areas and even the bathrooms. The design concept aims to immerse diners in a coastal ambiance, making them feel connected to the beach and ocean of Malaga, despite being in the capital city. The ground floor's Bar Resalao sets the tone with walls adorned in white fabric braided to resemble fishing nets, backlit by neon shapes that evoke deep-sea creatures. This initial area immediately transports guests into an aquatic environment. Moving further into the ground level, a dedicated "shipyard room" features a rich material palette including walnut, terracotta-colored fabric, and stainless steel-clad walls. This room is enhanced by vintage paintings depicting sea scenes, creating a rustic yet refined maritime atmosphere. The decor in this section is largely bespoke, encompassing custom-designed chandeliers, pendants, and unique orange banquette fabric, alongside ceramic tiles and sconces that contribute to its distinctive character. The restaurant's basement level hosts two distinct private dining spaces, accessible via a red-tiled lobby. One of these areas is a striking burgundy, ship-shaped room, creatively incorporating mirrors that function as portholes to enhance the illusion of being on a vessel. The other private dining space is themed in sea-blue, featuring a stainless-steel bar that complements its cool, oceanic palette. This area also boasts custom club chairs and Blasco & Vila dining chairs under a vaulted ceiling made of deep red MDF, with acoustic panels by Aistec. Even the functional spaces, such as the bathrooms, are integrated into the overarching theme. They are designed to resemble chic fish butcheries, utilizing industrial plastic curtains and concrete troughs, adding an unexpected and stylish touch to the utility areas. The second private dining space on the basement level further exemplifies the thoughtful design with a sand and concrete wall, symbolizing the beach. This space is furnished with leather banquettes and custom blue tiles, along with sea-urchin-shaped sconces, reinforcing the coastal narrative. The bar area itself features Quartz Calacatta Boheme atop a terrazzo floor, with custom storage solutions and personality-rich paintings, blending utility with aesthetic appeal. Óscar Engroba, Astet's creative director, explains that the design successfully "submerges the ambience of the sea into the capital," effectively bridging the geographical distance between Madrid and the coastal region of Malaga through a cohesive and immersive interior design strategy. Domino has announced a collaboration with Lenox Corporation to launch a curated collection of dinnerware. This partnership aims to introduce vibrant and distinctly patterned tabletop items, catering to various design aesthetics. The inaugural Domino by Lenox line is designed to offer essential dinnerware, providing options for those seeking a complete new set or merely a few complementary pieces for their existing collection. The collection features three distinct patterns, each embodying a unique character while aligning with the core ethos of Domino. The first pattern, named Optique, is set to debut at New York’s Tabletop Market. Optique draws inspiration from the grid-like appearance of digital pixelation, featuring an ombre effect with gradient blues, purples, and pinks. This design is described as simultaneously contemporary and classic, appealing to a wide range of consumers. Kate Berry, Domino Style Director, revealed that the inspiration for Optique considered the typical Domino reader and market viability, including individuals registering for weddings or furnishing their first apartments. The concept for the ombre pixelation originated from observing cross-stitching gradients and the pixelated appearance of zoomed-in screenshots of colors. Despite its bold nature, the modern print is versatile and can be integrated into minimalist settings by pairing it with crisp white linens and simple table decor. To further accommodate a pared-back aesthetic, the Optique line also includes pieces in solid colors such as deep cobalt blue and soft peach, which are designed to create striking contrasts when layered. Berry emphasized the collaborative nature of the design process between Domino and Lenox, highlighting that the collection was conceived with various complementary ideas, including regular ombre, pixelated versions, and solid colors with contrasting borders. Following its initial showcase at the Tabletop Market, Optique will be available for purchase nationwide in the fall on Lenox.com, in the Domino shop, and at select specialty retailers. Two additional patterns, Technic and Gradiance, are also scheduled for release in the autumn. Technic is a vintage-inspired design that incorporates pale pinks, deep blue, and electric citron, reminiscent of retro arcade games. Gradiance offers a softer aesthetic with floral-inspired reds and pinks, presented in smudged brushstrokes that evoke the appearance of watercolors. Technic will be available at Bloomingdales, while Gradiance will be sold at Anthropologie. Michele Barbone, CMO of Lenox Corporation, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it reinforces Lenox’s position as a leading tableware and entertaining company in North America.
