Knock on wood – six stunning wooden concert halls around the world
This article explores the significant role of wood in the acoustic design and construction of six notable concert halls globally, examining how this natural material contributes to their acclaimed sound quality. These structures often deviate from modern materials like steel, concrete, and glass, embracing traditional or innovative uses of wood to create exceptional auditory environments.
Symphony Hall in Birmingham, opened in 1991, is lauded as Britain's premier concert hall. It employs a traditional “shoebox” shape, known for fostering an optimal balance of reflective surfaces crucial for perfect acoustics. The hall incorporates extensive wood usage and features an adjustable reverberation chamber, a 12,700 cubic meter void, which allows for precise control over echo levels. An acoustic canopy above the stage can also be lowered to modify the space for smaller ensembles or speakers, ensuring versatility in its acoustic performance.
The Angelika Kauffmann-Saal in Schwarzenberg, Austria, is home to an annual international Schubertiade. Renovated in 2001, the hall is constructed from regional fir and beech wood. It has garnered high praise from critics, with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ranking it among Austria's top three chamber music venues and Die Welt equating its quality to London's Wigmore Hall. The Dallas Morning News described the experience as “sitting in a musical instrument,” highlighting its deep resonance and clarity, which enhances chamber music similar to how the Bayreuth Festspielhaus transforms opera.
Finland's Sibelius Hall in Lahti, completed in 2000, stands as the largest public wooden building constructed in Finland in over a century. Designed by Artec Consultants, it shares design elements with Symphony Hall Birmingham, including the “shoebox” layout, acoustic doors, and a movable stage canopy. The main hall's floor is made of oil- and heat-treated smoke birch parquet. Its robust walls feature glass façades over laminated veneer lumber panels filled with sand and mineral wool, and all load-bearing structures are glulam. Architects Kimmo Lintula and Hannu Tikka drew inspiration from Finnish forests, aiming to evoke the natural environment's nourishing and relaxing essence.
Glyndebourne, an English country house in the Sussex Downs, hosts the annual Glyndebourne Festival Opera. In 1994, a new opera house, the first purpose-built in the UK since 1934, was constructed. Crafted from century-old pitch pine into elegant curves, the horseshoe-shaped auditorium, lit by small lamps, emits a warm glow. Architects Michael Hopkins and Partners emphasized that the interior's shapes are acoustically prescribed, describing the hall as “literally a music box.”
Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, opened in 2009, is the home of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and part of the Wales Millennium Centre. The Centre extensively uses natural materials, including various woods from renewable sources in mid-Wales, such as oak, ash, beech, and sycamore. The concourse galleries are designed to evoke a forest edge, symbolizing a boundary between the real and magical worlds. The Hall's interior, finished in sitka spruce, oak, and steamed beech, features an acoustic ceiling reflector and draws inspiration from Victorian chapels. Its design received a special Wood Award in 2009 for the best use of panel products.
Helzberg Hall, located within the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, opened in 2011. This 1,600-seat concert space features a thrust stage made from Alaskan red cedar, with walls paneled in vertical grain Douglas fir and rift red oak flooring. Frank Miller Lumber supplied 34,000 square feet of flooring, noting that quartersawn hardwoods minimize warping. The hall also houses a substantial pipe organ, with its design and natural materials complementing the auditorium. The New York Times praised Helzberg Hall's “spectacular, with an astonishingly warm, present sound” upon its opening.
