Design: A Girly Bedroom for the Ages
Jess Ebert of Four Story Interiors was tasked with designing a bedroom for a 6-year-old girl in a Dilworth bungalow, a project undertaken after she had already renovated several other rooms in the clients' home. The primary goal was to create a versatile space that the child could grow into, avoiding elements that would quickly become outdated. This involved thoughtful selection of furniture, colors, and decor to ensure longevity and adaptability.
Ebert opted for a queen-size bed to accommodate the girl's growth, a strategic choice that ensures the room remains functional for many years. The walls were painted with Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground, a soft pink hue selected for its timeless appeal, designed not to appear childish as the occupant ages. A significant feature of the room is a custom-built reading nook integrated into the window space. This decision was driven by the client's daughter being an avid reader, providing her with a dedicated and comfortable area for her hobby. The built-in design also addressed the practical need for storage in a smaller home, offering concealed spaces for toys and other belongings.
For the color palette, Ebert drew inspiration from lilac drapes, which became the starting point for the room's overall aesthetic. These drapes, adorned with fringe from Samuel & Sons, were specifically chosen to introduce a fun and playful element. The same lilac fabric was utilized for the window seat cushion, complementing custom polka-dot pillows crafted from Rebecca Atwood fabric. The lighting scheme incorporates a red six-arm light from Stray Dog Designs, providing a vibrant pop of color, alongside gold sconces that frame the bed and feature gold scalloped socket covers, enhancing the room's elegant touch.
The flooring is covered by a custom-cut patterned rug from Stark Carpet, fitted precisely to the room's dimensions. The bed itself is upholstered in a delicate pink-and-white ticking stripe pattern from Coley Home, further softened by shams from Biscuit Home that feature a lilac scalloped hem, echoing the window treatments. Ebert’s design philosophy emphasized preventing overcrowding, recognizing the room would also serve as a play area due to the absence of a separate playroom. This approach ensures the space remains open and functional for various activities.
Additional furnishings include a three-drawer dresser from Anthropologie, chosen for its white foliage spirals that balance a girly aesthetic with a grounded feel through its bone inlay material. A heart-shaped mirror from Crate & Kids and a strawberry table lamp from Stray Dog Designs add whimsical touches. Jewelry-inspired brass star knobs on the window seat drawers provide intricate detail. Ebert highlighted the importance of selecting colors and accents that resonate personally with the child while ensuring the overall design has longevity, aiming for a space that retains its appeal and relevance for five years or more despite childhood changes.
