shape & shade's sculptural wooden chair reimagines traditional albanian shkam stool
SHAPE & SHADE studio has introduced BOLD SHKAM, a furniture collection that modernizes the traditional Albanian Shkam stool. Designed in Kosovo, this collection merges cultural heritage with contemporary design principles, emphasizing modularity, sculptural forms, and eco-friendly materials. The project aims to reimagine the rich tradition of Albanian craftsmanship for a design-conscious audience. BOLD SHKAM's chairs are crafted from layered plywood, a choice that underscores the designers' commitment to sustainability while providing both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
Each chair in the BOLD SHKAM collection functions as a sculptural piece, distinguished by its unique forms and visual engagement. Key design elements include rounded seats, distinct cut-out backrests, and a variety of leg designs, collectively forming an object that is both artistic and functional. The inspiration for BOLD SHKAM is directly drawn from the Shkam, a traditional Albanian stool known for its simplicity and functionality. The collection respects these traditional roots while integrating modern elements to elevate the design into contemporary furniture.
A central feature of the BOLD SHKAM collection is its modular design. This allows for easy disassembly and reconfiguration of the chairs, with components such as legs, seats, and backrests designed to be mixed and matched. This modularity not only enables personalized combinations to suit individual tastes but also enhances the chair's versatility, making it adaptable to different spatial requirements. This adaptable nature is a nod to the inherent flexibility found in traditional Shkam stools.
The material choice of layered plywood highlights the collection's environmental consciousness. One variant features a reused wood finish, which imparts warmth and organic beauty. In contrast, another option boasts a vibrant red finish, adding a modern and eye-catching contrast. This deliberate selection of materials reflects the designers' dedication to sustainability, ensuring that the chairs are both design-forward and environmentally responsible. The project was led by Ibrahim Beqiri, with Engjëll Krasniqi as a designer, and manufactured by WOOD Weaver. Photography for the collection was provided by Photo Dardha.
BOLD SHKAM successfully blends traditional Albanian craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities, offering a collection that is both culturally resonant and aesthetically innovative. The chairs are not merely functional objects but also artistic statements, embodying a harmonious balance between heritage, contemporary style, and environmental responsibility.
