The $5 laundry staple a plumber swears by for unblocking drains
Kitchen sink drains often become slow and smelly due to the accumulation of greasy residue and food particles. A common DIY method involves mixing vinegar and baking soda, which produces a fizzing reaction but frequently fails to effectively clear the blockage. This is because grease is acidic, and vinegar is also acidic, neutralizing any potential cleaning benefit. While baking soda is alkaline and can help, it is not as potent as another household item: washing soda.
Daniel Smith from Cal's Plumbing advocates for washing soda, also known as sodium carbonate, as a more effective solution. Washing soda is significantly more alkaline than baking soda, making it superior for breaking down grease and clearing drains. In Australia, Lectric washing soda is readily available at major retailers like Woolworths and Coles for approximately $5, and at The Reject Shop for $4.75.
To utilize washing soda for drain unblocking, Lectric recommends a specific process. First, pour boiling water down the drain. Once it has drained, slowly add one cup of Lectric soda. Follow this immediately with another cup of boiling water and allow the mixture to sit for five minutes. After this period, pour more boiling water into the drain to check if the blockage has cleared and water flows freely. If the drain remains partially blocked, the process should be repeated until the flow improves. Regular maintenance, such as pouring a cup of Lectric Washing Soda and hot water down drains weekly, is suggested to prevent future blockages.
Beyond drain unblocking, washing soda is a versatile cleaning agent for various household tasks. In the laundry, it can remove grease stains from clothes by soaking them overnight, clean washing machines, soften water in hard water areas, and act as a detergent booster for brighter clothes. In the bathroom, it is effective for cleaning basin drains, shower curtains, grout, and tiles. For kitchen applications, washing soda can eliminate brown stains from mugs, clean oven surfaces, serve as a substitute for dishwashing liquid, enhance dishwasher detergent performance, and remove burnt-on grease from pans and casserole dishes (excluding aluminum ones). If, despite using washing soda, a drain problem persists, it may indicate a more severe issue requiring professional plumbing intervention.
