summer residence's sharp geometry emerges from greek seaside slope
The Ovidium, a summer residence designed by Hive Architects, is situated on a peninsula overlooking the Argosaronikos Gulf in Greece. The project focuses on integrating architecture with its natural surroundings through a systematic approach to proportion, rhythm, and material consistency. The design is characterized by a series of covered spaces, uniformly supported by columns, which together create a balanced geometric arrangement. This arrangement promotes a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior environments, fostering an open yet precisely scaled living experience.
The selection of materials was a critical aspect of the architectural design, aiming for a unified and cohesive aesthetic. The primary materials used include white plaster, metal columns, rammed earth, and travertine. Rammed earth is utilized to visually and physically anchor the structure to the landscape, blending it seamlessly with the natural terrain. Travertine is incorporated for its durability and its historical connection to classical architectural styles, adding a timeless quality to the residence. The intentional contrast between smooth and rough surface textures enhances the tactile experience within and around the building, while also contributing to the clarity of its volumetric form.
Hive Architects extended their design philosophy to the landscape, aligning it with the site's inherent geometry and natural contours. The planting strategy incorporates low Mediterranean shrubs and carefully selected flora, which frame the architecture without obstructing the expansive coastal views. This approach ensures that the visual harmony between the built environment and the natural landscape is maintained and strengthened.
The Ovidium project aims to establish a meaningful dialogue between architecture and its setting through an ordered layout, a restrained material palette, and a thoughtful consideration of natural light. The residence is designed to offer an enduring spatial quality that connects human occupants with the environment. This connection is achieved through the architectural principles of simplicity, balanced proportion, and the effective use of light, which collectively define the character of the summer home.
