Non-Toxic Couches - Furniture Swatches of Sofas & Armchairs Tested For Indications of PFAS

Mamavation, in partnership with Environmental Health News, conducted a consumer study investigating the presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) “forever chemicals” in furniture swatches from sofas, armchairs, and ottomans. PFAS chemicals are widely used for their stain-resistant, oil-resistant, grease-resistant, and water-resistant properties, often found in various household products beyond furniture. These chemicals pose significant health risks due to their persistence and toxicity, with links to reduced immunity, altered growth and development in children, increased cholesterol levels, metabolic diseases, cardiovascular disease, lower fertility in both men and women, increased risk of certain cancers, endocrine disruption, and thyroid dysfunction. Exposure is widespread, as indicated by biomonitoring data from the CDC showing PFAS presence in most Americans. For this investigation, 42 furniture swatches from 19 different brands, many of which market themselves as “non-toxic” or “flame-retardant-free,” were sent to an EPA-certified laboratory. The testing aimed to identify indications of PFAS through the detection of organic fluorine, a marker for these chemicals. The results revealed that 71% of the tested swatches (30 out of 42) showed indications of PFAS, with organic fluorine levels above 10 parts per million (ppm). Specifically, 17% (7 out of 42) had levels above 100 ppm, and 55% (23 out of 42) had levels between 10 ppm and 100 ppm. The detected organic fluorine concentrations ranged from 11 ppm to 1,550 ppm. A caveat was noted regarding the use of fabric swatches versus actual furniture fabric, acknowledging potential differences in treatment or exposure to contaminants during shipping. The article further explains how PFAS enter furniture, primarily through “performance fabrics” designed to resist stains and water. Historically, C8 fluorocarbon-based treatments were common, replaced by C6 and C4 types after their toxicity became known. While the textile industry is exploring alternatives, complete removal of PFAS from all furniture is ongoing. Other industries where PFAS are prevalent include textiles, food packaging, personal care products, toilet paper, cookware, carpeting and flooring, firefighting foam, metal plating, and processed foods. Mamavation has conducted similar investigations across these product categories. Beyond PFAS, the article highlights flame retardants as another significant concern in couches. Chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and chlorinated flame retardants (CFR) are associated with endocrine disruption, decreased fertility, immune suppression, developmental problems, and cancer. While some phosphorus-based flame retardants are eliminated more quickly, they still pose health risks, such as hormonal and developmental toxicity. The State of California and other states have rescinded mandates for flame retardants in furniture due to their toxicity and limited effectiveness, making flame-retardant-free furniture a safer choice that can reduce household dust contamination. The investigation involved collecting swatches between November 2023 and April 2024, with each sample meticulously handled to prevent cross-contamination before being tested for total and organic fluorine. The list of tested brands includes EcoBalanza, Ethan & Allen, Green Row, IKEA, Joybird, LaZBoy, Living Spaces, Maiden Home, Medley Home, Namesake Home Furniture, Pottery Barn, Rejuvenation, Revolution Performance Fabrics, Room & Board, Rove Concepts, Sabai Designs, Savvy Rest, The Futon Shop, and West Elm, with detailed results provided for members. #NonToxicCouches #PFASChemicals #FurnitureTesting #OrganicFluorine #ForeverChemicals #FlameRetardants #ConsumerStudy #ProductSafety #HealthyHome #NonToxicCouches #PFASChemicals #FurnitureTesting #OrganicFluorine #ForeverChemicals #FlameRetardants #ConsumerStudy #ProductSafety #HealthyHome
