I've found the perfect storage hack for my vacuum cleaner
The article details the creation of a concealed vacuum cleaner storage cupboard within a kitchen, addressing the common problem of unsightly appliances in open-plan living spaces. The author, a professional vacuum cleaner reviewer, explains how the need for a discreet storage solution became apparent after years of dealing with visible vacuum cleaners and their accessories.
Previously, cordless vacuums were mounted on walls, creating visual clutter due to their awkward placement and exposed wiring. Storing them in a utility room was impractical for daily use due to the distance from the main living area. This personal experience led to the decision to design a dedicated, hidden storage space during a kitchen renovation.
The solution involved utilizing a narrow, otherwise redundant space between a tall fridge-freezer and a back door. A slim stud wall structure was built, transforming this void into a tall, full-height cupboard. The internal structure comprises the existing house walls on two sides, with stud timber lined with painted marine-grade plywood on the others. The door, also plywood, is completely flat and painted to match the surrounding framework, making it blend seamlessly with the kitchen architecture. It is fitted with Blum soft-close sprung hinges and push-to-open catches, ensuring a handle-free, minimalist appearance.
Functionally, the cupboard is surprisingly spacious, accommodating a cordless vacuum (or two, for testing purposes) and a mop bucket. A shelf above holds a basket for vacuum nozzles and attachments. A double socket was installed inside for charging the vacuums. The total material cost for this DIY project was estimated to be between £180 and £220, excluding labor and potential electrician fees.
In daily life, the cupboard enhances efficiency and maintains visual calm. Its strategic location on the main route between the kitchen and side-garden allows for quick access to the vacuum, making routine cleaning faster. The cordless vacuum is always charged and ready, and the soft-closing door instantly restores the kitchen's tidy appearance. The solid ply doors also conceal any bright LED charging lights, contributing to the discreet nature of the storage. The full-height design prevents items from getting wedged or tangled.
Future plans for the cupboard include moving the mop to the utility room to free up space for vertical shelves to store bulk items like kitchen roll and cleaning refills. The author also intends to add a nozzle organizer, possibly mounted on the inside of the door, to keep attachments upright and easily accessible. The flexibility of the stud wall construction allows for easy modifications.
The article also offers alternative vacuum storage tips for those without the option of building a dedicated cupboard. These include using hose tidies for cylinder vacuums, creating dedicated slots in under-stair cupboards with dividers, and adding battery-powered lights to dark storage spaces. The overarching message emphasizes that even small, seemingly insignificant spaces can be repurposed into highly functional storage solutions, contributing to a more organized and aesthetically pleasing home environment.
