This principle was vividly demonstrated at the recent WOW!house design exhibit held at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour in London, England. The exhibition featured 22 unique rooms, each crafted by leading interior designers, where lighting often took center stage. The WOW!house exhibition, open to the public for a month in June to support the United in Design charity, was not a traditional house but an innovative installation. The refurbishment of levels 9 and 10 at 452 Flinders Street in Melbourne, VIC, showcases a dramatic application of SUPAWOOD’s MAXI BEAM system, integrated with sophisticated lighting, within the lift lobbies and corridors. This project was spearheaded by INTREC Management in collaboration with Architectus, with a primary objective of creating an inviting and dynamic atmosphere in the common areas. This enhancement was crucial to attracting corporate tenants to this prestigious CBD address, aiming to reflect the quality and modernity of the building. A key design challenge involved seamlessly combining batten strip lighting with the aesthetic of substantial timber beams. The environment was a live operational space, demanding materials that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for installation. SUPAWOOD’s MAXI BEAM lightweight timber beams were chosen as the optimal solution, offering the desired authentic timber appearance without the weight and installation complexities of solid timber. Their lightweight nature facilitated easy transportation and allowed for efficient on-site cutting, significantly streamlining the installation process and minimizing disruption in an active commercial building. In the lift lobbies, the ceilings on both levels feature MAXI BEAM in a SUPAFINISH laminate Tasmanian Oak. This choice of material and finish creates a striking directional effect that guides the eye. Batten lighting strips, precisely matching the 150x50mm dimensions of the timber beams, are strategically placed parallel to the beams along the ceiling. A unique design element involves the battens shifting across the beams at a 90-degree angle, requiring precise on-site fabrication which was easily accomplished with the adaptable MAXI BEAM product. The result is a visually impactful interplay of light and timber that significantly elevates the aesthetic of the entire area. Extending this directional design, the wall at the end of the lobby is clad with custom pre-assembled SUPASLAT MAXI slatted panels. These panels are perfectly matched in finish and style to the ceiling beams. The slats on the wall are oriented horizontally, creating an illusion that the ceiling material wraps down and continues along the wall. This cohesive design strategy reinforces the sense of flow and sophistication within the space. Ultimately, this project serves as a compelling example of how the intelligent application of MAXI BEAM, coupled with thoughtfully integrated lighting, can transform conventional interiors into memorable and upscale environments.
