Duck crepes in an airy patio
The Althea restaurant, located in Cambridge’s Central Square within the Sonder 907 Main hotel, offers a distinctive dining experience. This establishment is the latest venture from Shauna Rayburn and Greg Reeves, the husband-and-wife team also behind Vialé, another popular brunch spot across Massachusetts Avenue. Althea distinguishes itself with a versatile ambiance, featuring a cozy, dimly lit bar area suitable for intimate gatherings or focused work, and a main restaurant space ideal for business lunches, first dates, or family dinners. A standout feature of Althea is its expansive, secluded outdoor patio, considered one of the finest al fresco dining areas in the vicinity.
The culinary philosophy at Althea incorporates smoked ingredients, with a dedicated smoker on the patio that prepares items such as the highly acclaimed smoked duck. The menu thoughtfully blends seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. Popular appetizers include a Little Gem Caesar salad with parmesan crisps, asparagus served with a crispy egg, fried cauliflower, and braised cabbage accompanied by a parsnip purée. The emphasis on smoked and savory elements extends to the main courses, where the smoked duck crepe is a highlight. This dish features shredded smoked duck encased in a delicate blue crepe, served with a spicy chili barbecue sauce and a frisée salad, creating a balance of flavors and textures.
Beyond the crepes, Althea's lunch menu includes a housemade veggie burger, a short rib hot dog, and a Cubano sandwich. Many dishes, such as the double bacon cheeseburger, smoky corn chowder, and ceviche, are available throughout the day and evening. The ceviche, composed of halibut, squid, and shrimp marinated in citrus, is presented artistically with a foam dome over an ice-packed bowl. For dinner, the Giannone chicken with potato gnocchi and black garlic au jus is a recommended comfort dish, noted for its crispy skin, tender meat, and dumpling-like gnocchi. A duck breast dish and crab spaghetti are also available on the main menu.
Althea is committed to creating an inviting atmosphere, enhanced by a carefully curated musical selection. Patrons frequently hear Grateful Dead music and similar folk-hippie genres, contributing to the restaurant's unique character. The outdoor patio, described as an urban oasis, further enhances the dining experience, especially with its retractable roof that ensures comfortable dining regardless of weather conditions. The restaurant operates seven days a week, serving from 11:30 a.m. to midnight, catering to various dining preferences from casual lunches to evening meals. Althea aims to become a prominent social hub in Central Square, offering both culinary excellence and a distinctive ambiance.
