Best carpet stain removers, tested and reviewed
This article reviews and compares various carpet stain removers and popular home remedies, focusing on their effectiveness against common tough stains such as red wine, curry, coffee, and tomato ketchup. The aim is to identify the most efficient and user-friendly solutions for maintaining clean carpets.
The testing methodology involved applying specific stains to 50x50cm carpet tiles, with each zone dedicated to a particular stain type for each product or home remedy. Both fresh and dried stains were assessed, with fresh stains cleaned within five minutes of application and dried stains left overnight. The evaluation criteria included cleaning effectiveness, ease of use, and odor.
Several commercial carpet stain removers were tested, including products from 1001, Astonish Specialist, Dr. Beckmann, Ecover, Ecozone, HG, OzKleen, Rug Doctor, Simoniz, The Pink Stuff, and Vanish Gold Oxi Action. The article provides brief 'Need to know' summaries for each product, outlining application instructions and whether they include tools like brushes or cloths. Specific test results and recommendations for 'Best Buys' and 'Great Value' options are available to logged-in members.
Beyond commercial products, the article also explores the efficacy of common home remedies. A solution of Fairy Platinum Quick Wash washing-up liquid and warm water emerged as the most effective home remedy, comparable to many commercial products, despite requiring significant effort. Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) was found to be effective but left an unpleasant, lingering odor. White wine was tested for its ability to remove red wine stains and proved successful, seemingly working independently to lift the stain, though it also left behind a wine smell that required further cleaning. Distilled vinegar also worked but similarly left a strong odor. Bicarbonate of soda was tested in two mixtures (with warm water and with vinegar); it was ineffective on red wine stains, surprisingly causing a blue tint, but showed some success with curry stains, particularly when combined with vinegar, though again, the vinegar smell was a drawback.
The lead researcher, Hardeep Channa, offers practical advice for effective stain removal. This includes applying the remover directly to the stain, especially for older stains, and working it deep into the carpet fibers with a sponge. Allowing the product to sit for a few minutes (longer for dried stains) is crucial for it to penetrate the stain. For liquid stains, waiting for them to partially dry can prevent spreading. Scrubbing should always be done from the outside of the stain towards the center. Finally, a crucial tip is to recheck the stain the following day, as some stains can reappear once fully dry, potentially necessitating additional applications. The article emphasizes the importance of objective testing to provide consumers with reliable information for making informed purchasing decisions.
