Ask The Masters: Who’s Using ecoFINISH & Why?
The pool construction and renovation industry is continuously seeking innovative products to enhance pool quality and streamline installation. A recent inquiry within the "Ask The Masters" Facebook group prompted a discussion about ecoFINISH products. To address this, an interview was conducted with Joe Solana, President of ecoFINISH, and Jacob Tetrick, an installer and applicator, to explain ecoFINISH's technology and its growing popularity.
ecoFINISH specializes in external flame spray powder coating, utilizing chemically resistant, UV-stable polyethylene powders. This technology results in highly durable pool surfaces that are resistant to water chemistry and sunlight, preventing typical issues like bleach marks or damage from excessive chlorine or muriatic acid. A key advantage highlighted by Solana is the exceptionally short curing process, which takes only a few minutes. This allows pools to be filled with a standard garden hose immediately after application, eliminating the need for a protracted two-week curing period and the logistics of trucked water often associated with other finishes.
Jacob Tetrick of Quality USA Pools in South Dakota adopted ecoFINISH due to increasing demand for pool resurfacing and a need for high-end, faster solutions. He notes that the ease of application is a significant benefit, allowing complex resurfacing projects to be completed with a smaller crew of three workers. This efficiency saves time and reduces labor challenges. Tetrick prioritizes providing high-quality, long-term solutions, and ecoFINISH helps him achieve this by offering a product that ensures profitability and minimizes recurring issues for clients.
The durability of ecoFINISH is a major selling point. The product comes with a ten-year warranty, with observed lifespans exceeding 15 years without significant maintenance. The ability to seamlessly repair localized damage, such as cracks in concrete pools, by reapplying the coating, further enhances its appeal. Tetrick contrasts ecoFINISH with vinyl liners, which typically have a shorter lifespan (three to seven years) and higher replacement costs, while ecoFINISH offers a fade-resistant, environmentally friendly alternative.
Recognizing the challenge of introducing new technology, ecoFINISH committed to providing free training for its applicators. Solana, with a lifelong background in the pool industry, understood that charging for training could deter adoption. This commitment ensures that applicators are proficient in the flame spray process, mitigating potential installation errors and fostering confidence in the product. The company also offers support for applicators transitioning between different pool types, such as concrete to fiberglass, acknowledging the specialized nature of segments within the industry and ensuring proper application across various substrates.
In essence, ecoFINISH offers a robust, efficient, and user-friendly solution for pool surfaces. Its chemical and UV resistance, rapid curing, ease of application, and long-term durability, combined with the company's commitment to comprehensive, free training, make it an attractive option for pool professionals and homeowners seeking a superior alternative to traditional pool finishes.
