A Narnia-Style Reading Nook Sits Just Behind This Toddler’s Bedroom Closet Door

Lauren Heanes, a set designer and prop stylist, and her husband, Waine Longwell, an architecture student, prioritized creating a comfortable and inspiring home for their two children, Tennessee (4) and Augie (3), after relocating to Portland, Oregon. Their first major project in their 1912 Craftsman home was Tennessee’s bedroom, designed to accommodate her current preferences for "rainbow, pink, and red" while also being adaptable for her teenage years. The renovation began with addressing the heavily textured popcorn ceiling, which they covered with tongue-and-groove paneling to create a cozier atmosphere, contrasting with Portland’s colder climate. They aimed for a blend of color and whimsy that could also mature with their daughter. The chosen wallpaper was a red and cream block-print from Cole & Son, which provided a playful yet polished backdrop. A cool green version of the same wallpaper is planned for Augie’s room, ensuring cohesive sibling spaces. Selecting the right shade of pink trim was a challenge, but Farrow & Ball’s Middleton Pink was ultimately chosen for its subtle versatility, appearing almost white at times and distinctly pink at others. The couple incorporated a mix of vintage pieces and personal heirlooms into the room’s design. A mid-century wall unit inherited from Heanes’s grandparents was a central feature. Beneath it, a hand-painted chest, also a family heirloom from the 1950s, was repurposed for storage and served as a stand for Tennessee’s record player and vintage storybook collection. Additional decor included various Etsy finds, such as 1950s lamps, artwork, and vintage frames. Scalloped shelves, a curbside freebie, were revitalized with bright green paint and new drawer pulls, adding a touch of charm. The design ethos was to avoid committing to a single style, instead blending mid-century and cottagecore elements. For instance, a lemon yellow antique Jenny Lind bed was introduced, complemented by a custom-built, matching citrus-hued trundle bed designed by Longwell. This trundle features a squiggly border, making it ideal for sleepovers and future guests. The combination of graphic wallpaper and a wood ceiling created an interesting visual contrast within the room. One of the most significant transformations was the creation of a Narnia-style reading nook within the bedroom closet. This space, naturally nestled under a flight of stairs, already had a built-in bench and a window, giving it great potential beyond mere storage. Wall-mounted bookshelves were installed to define a cozy reading area, alongside a built-in shelf for organizing art supplies and smaller toys in stackable IKEA boxes. A wraparound row of Shaker pegs provided ample hanging space for dress-up clothes and other items. Currently, Tennessee enjoys using this area for imaginative play, dressing up in capes and tutus. However, her parents envision this versatile space adapting with her, potentially becoming a homework spot or a personalized retreat adorned with string lights and posters as she grows into her teenage years. #KidsRooms #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #CraftsmanHome #VintageDecor #ReadingNook #DIYRenovation #FamilyHome #KidsRooms #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #CraftsmanHome #VintageDecor #ReadingNook #DIYRenovation #FamilyHome
