This Del Ray Vintage Store Specializes in Midcentury-Modern Furniture and Barware

The George Vintage & Design, a new vintage furniture store specializing in midcentury-modern goods, opened its doors in Del Ray earlier this summer. Located on Mount Vernon Avenue, the 1,000-square-foot establishment offers a curated selection of vintage furniture, rugs, glassware, and other home accessories. Additionally, it features candles and art from local Alexandria creators such as ISO Candles and artist Nina Louise. The store's owner, Teri Brake, a long-time enthusiast and collector of vintage and midcentury pieces, transitioned from a corporate role in New York during the pandemic. Her journey led her to Alexandria, where she decided to establish her business, driven by her passion for vintage design. The store is affectionately named after her seven-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, George, who often acts as a welcoming presence for customers. Brake's decision to center her store around midcentury furniture stems from her personal affection for the style, as well as its inherent versatility. She notes that the clean lines and simple structures of midcentury pieces allow them to seamlessly integrate into various existing design schemes without clashing. Brake personally sources all items from across the country, focusing on acquiring high-quality pieces that are in excellent condition. Beyond offering retail products, The George Vintage & Design also provides design services. These services include assisting clients in repurposing and reorganizing their current home furnishings and sourcing new items to complement their spaces. While the majority of items in Brake's inventory are from the 1960s, she also includes select pieces from the 1950s and 1970s. Among her current favorite offerings are a pair of 1960s Milo Baughman-inspired tub swivel chairs upholstered in their original orange velvet, several items from the renowned furniture company Herman Miller, and a set of 1960s Danish teak dining room chairs. Brake consistently maintains a collection of vintage barware, as well as coffee and tea mugs, which are also personal favorites. She advises against opting for contemporary replicas of midcentury-modern styles found in larger retail chains, suggesting that patience in finding authentic vintage pieces is a superior approach. Although original vintage items may have a higher initial cost, Brake emphasizes that a well-maintained, authentic piece represents a better investment and offers superior quality. Her philosophy is encapsulated in the phrase, “Slow design is the best design,” encouraging clients to be patient and thoughtful with their living spaces. Brake finds immense satisfaction in the cyclical nature of her work, particularly when customers choose items she has personally sourced and curated to integrate into their own homes. This process, she explains, is incredibly rewarding and never loses its appeal. The George Vintage & Design is open from Thursday to Friday, 11 AM to 6 PM; Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM; and Sunday, 11 AM to 3 PM, located at 2210 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. #DelRay #VintageFurniture #MidcenturyModern #HomeDecor #AlexandriaDesign #InteriorDesign #TeriBrake #TheGeorgeVintageAndDesign #DelRay #VintageFurniture #MidcenturyModern #HomeDecor #AlexandriaDesign #InteriorDesign #TeriBrake #TheGeorgeVintageAndDesign
