Ruggable Doormat Review: A Stylish Solution That Easily Ditches Dirt and Debris
This review evaluates the Ruggable doormat, a two-part washable system designed to offer a long-term, easy-to-clean alternative to traditional doormats. The author, having frequently replaced cheap doormats due to wear and tear, sought a more durable and practical solution. The Ruggable doormat consists of a heavy-duty bristle rug cover and a thick, sturdy rubber base. The rubber base incorporates several smart features, including drainage holes to prevent water and mildew buildup, and a textured tread on its underside to keep the mat securely in place, even during windy conditions. Hook-and-loop tape attachments embedded within larger holes in the base secure the rug cover.
The rug cover is made from robust bristles, engineered to effectively trap dirt, mud, and debris, while also demonstrating resistance to the elements and UV rays. Ruggable offers over 200 styles for their doormats, available in a standard 3x2-foot size and a larger 4.5x2.5-foot estate size. A key feature is the washability; the cover can be detached and machine-washed in cold water with mild detergent, while the base can be rinsed with a garden hose.
The testing process involved using a Morris & Co. Strawberry Thief Minor Indigo doormat, initially outdoors on a covered porch and subsequently indoors in an entryway. Outdoor testing focused on durability against wind and sun exposure, with the doormat successfully remaining in place and showing no signs of fading after several weeks. Indoor testing assessed its functionality in a Wisconsin entryway, where doormats are subjected to snow, ice, mud, and muck. The mat's half-inch thickness proved sufficient to allow door clearance without interference. A minor issue noted was the occasional dislodgement of rubber backings during relocation, though these were easily reinserted.
For cleaning, the author intentionally soiled the mat with mud, dirt, coffee grounds, yogurt, and crushed tomato. After the stains set, the cover was detached and machine-washed on a gentle cycle with cold water, while the base was wiped clean. All stains were successfully removed from the cover, which also maintained its vibrant appearance and was only slightly damp after washing, requiring a short air-dry cycle. Reattaching the cover to the base required some alignment effort due to the hook-and-loop tape, taking approximately three minutes.
Overall, the Ruggable doormat received a positive assessment for its sturdiness, style, and ease of cleaning, with the ability to wash both the cover and base. The variety of stylish options and the ease of swapping covers for seasonal changes were also highlighted as advantages. The primary drawback identified was the relatively high price, with initial systems starting at $129, and the tendency for some rubber backings to occasionally detach. Despite the cost, the mat was deemed a worthwhile investment for its quality and practical features. Ruggable doormats are available for purchase directly from the brand's website and Amazon, with covers also sold separately, and bundles available for cost savings.
