Painting to preserve history

Brecksville residents Joe and Liz DiVincenzo recently undertook the intricate task of repainting the exterior of their nearly 150-year-old home, known locally as the Knowlton-Bourn residence. This decision was driven by a sense of responsibility to preserve the home's original character for themselves and the community. The house, a Victorian-Italianate style structure, was built in 1879 by Dr. William A. Knowlton, a prominent Brecksville physician and Civil War veteran. Following his relocation to Cleveland, the home was sold to his protégé, Dr. Ernest Bourn, and continued its use as a doctor's office. Notably, the dining room of the house later served as Brecksville's first public library, with Bourn’s wife, Mary, acting as the librarian. The property has since passed through several owners, with the DiVincenzos being the sixth. Over the past decade since acquiring the property, the DiVincenzos have meticulously renovated nearly every room, aiming to restore the residence to its late 19th-century appearance. While some areas had been modernized by previous owners, the couple worked to bring them back to their historical roots. Original features such as wood flooring, high ceilings, windows, and fireplaces have been maintained. The thick black walnut trim and molding throughout the house have been preserved in their original unpainted state. The renovations also included refinishing the floors, polishing the trim, expanding and updating the kitchen with a tin ceiling (a popular feature of the era), and adorning walls with custom reproduction wallpaper featuring period-appropriate designs. Their commitment to authenticity led them to research late-1800s home design extensively and use a brand of paints specifically formulated to replicate historical color palettes. Beyond structural and surface renovations, the DiVincenzos have curated an extensive collection of antiques to enhance the home's period feel. This collection includes era-appropriate fireplace mantles, rugs, curtains, lamps, light fixtures, and even small details like door handles and hinges, all contributing to an authentic historical ambiance. When it came to the exterior restoration, Liz DiVincenzo recognized the need for expert guidance to accurately display the home's original architectural design. They engaged internationally recognized color expert Amy Wax, known for her contributions to various home design publications and her own paint line. Amy Wax provided crucial assistance in selecting six timeless paint colors and advising on their precise placement to highlight the building's intended architectural form. To execute this vision, the DiVincenzos enlisted Advanced Painting, a Broadview Heights-based company. The painting team, led by Bob Manashian, acknowledged that this project was more about historical restoration than a typical paint job. Despite challenges such as summer rainstorms and COVID-related paint shortages, the team successfully completed the project, which Manashian described as one of the most rewarding. The outcome is a home that now boasts a traditional Victorian aesthetic with subdued, elegant, and regal colors, a significant departure from its previous green and white scheme, yet historically accurate for the period. #HistoricalPreservation #HomeRenovation #VictorianArchitecture #ColorConsultation #ExteriorPainting #HomeRestoration #InteriorDesign #BrecksvilleHistory #ArchitecturalDetails #HistoricalPreservation #HomeRenovation #VictorianArchitecture #ColorConsultation #ExteriorPainting #HomeRestoration #InteriorDesign #BrecksvilleHistory #ArchitecturalDetails
