Kartell, bringing innovation home since 1949
Kartell, a brand with over 70 years of history, was founded by Giulio Castelli and his wife Anna Castelli Ferrieri with the vision of transforming plastic, a then-disregarded material, into fashionable and durable design pieces. Starting in 1949, their aim was to create light, affordable objects that bridged technology and design. This pioneering approach led to Kartell’s global recognition, particularly in the 1970s, and its products are now featured in over 50 museum collections worldwide.
Throughout its history, Kartell has fostered long-standing collaborations with renowned international designers such as Antonio Citterio, Vico Magistretti, Ron Arad, Marcel Wanders, and notably, Philippe Starck. These partnerships have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of plastic furniture design and introducing iconic pieces to the market.
Philippe Starck's collaboration with Kartell has yielded several groundbreaking designs, including La Marie, the world's first transparent chair molded from a single piece of polycarbonate in 1999. This design paved the way for the even more successful Ghost chair, which became a global bestseller. Two decades later, Starck and Kartell unveiled A.I., a chair created using artificial intelligence in collaboration with human designers, optimized for minimal material usage and 100% recyclability. Starck's playful approach is also evident in "The Gnomes," a series of whimsical garden gnomes that double as coffee tables or stools, available in various colors, including minimalist gold and black. Another innovative creation is the Mr. Impossible Chair, which ingeniously unites two oval polycarbonate shells without glue, using invisible laser welding for its transparent legs, creating an illusion of the seat hovering in the air.
Beyond Starck’s contributions, other designers have also left a significant mark. Ferruccio Laviani's Bourgie Lamp is a striking piece that blends classic Baroque aesthetics with modern polycarbonate. Its design, though widely imitated, is distinctive, featuring a pleated lampshade that creates captivating reflections when illuminated. This lamp is available in vibrant colors, as well as classic gold, black, and transparent finishes.
Anna Castelli Ferrieri, one of the co-founders, designed the Componibili modular storage system. These elements, with their characteristic holes, possess a 1960s aesthetic but remain timeless due to their versatility and functionality. The Componibili system is available in numerous colors and a less common squared version, with wheels allowing for easy repositioning to suit varying user needs and preferences. These designs collectively underscore Kartell’s enduring commitment to innovation, quality, and the transformative potential of plastic in home furnishings.
