'Brilliant' product you just apply to fence and 'rain washes off green algae'

Green algae on fences is a common problem for many homeowners, not only detracting from the appearance of the garden but also potentially causing long-term damage to the wood. This article explores various methods and products recommended by gardening enthusiasts and experts for effectively removing green algae from fence panels. The discussion was initiated by Gemma Down in a Facebook group, Gardening UK – Hints, tips & advice, where she sought advice on how to tackle green algae on her fence panels. She questioned whether painting over the algae would resolve the issue or if prior treatment was necessary. The community responded with a wealth of practical advice and product recommendations, highlighting the importance of proper cleaning before any painting or staining. One of the most highly recommended products is "Wet & Forget," praised for its ease of use and effectiveness. Sabrina Connolly shared her positive experience, stating that the product requires simple application, after which rain naturally washes away the green algae. She noted its successful use on both slabs and decking. Ian Price echoed this recommendation, advising its use when the weather is warmer and dry, followed by a 10-day waiting period before painting or staining. He emphasized that attempting to paint over wet or algae-covered timber would lead to poor paint adhesion and premature failure. Price also cautioned against using power washers, explaining that they can damage the timber by opening its grain and forcing water deeper into the wood, thereby increasing its porosity and exacerbating future algae growth. Furthermore, he advised against household chemical concoctions like bleach, as they are not designed or tested for this purpose and can harm both the timber and the surrounding soil. Other effective solutions mentioned include white vinegar and "Patio Magic." Kaye Gilby recounted her success using white vinegar in a spray bottle to clean algae off her weather-boarded house, suggesting it be sprayed and left to work. Angela Knight recommended "Patio Magic," highlighting its ability to make algae disappear within three to five days after application. She also pointed out that "Patio Magic" is safe for pets once dry, making it a suitable option for households with animals. Angela also reinforced the warning against bleach, noting it can discolor wood, and advised that painted fences require regular repainting every two to three years to prevent algae return and maintain appearance. ABS Fencing, an expert source, provided a comprehensive list of do's and don'ts for fence cleaning. Their 'don'ts' include avoiding household mold or mildew removers, which are typically for indoor hard surfaces, and refraining from using bleach in the garden due to its harmful effects on plants and soil. They also warned against sanding the wood, as algae will simply regrow, and reiterated the dangers of power hosing. Their 'do's' include using a mixture of white vinegar and hot water applied with a spray bottle and brush, leaving it for at least 30 minutes before hosing it down. Finally, they advised repainting with a good quality fence paint once the wood is thoroughly dry. These expert tips collectively offer a holistic approach to maintaining clean, algae-free fences. #FenceCleaning #AlgaeRemoval #GardeningTips #HomeMaintenance #WetAndForget #WhiteVinegar #PatioMagic #DIYHomeCare #FenceCleaning #AlgaeRemoval #GardeningTips #HomeMaintenance #WetAndForget #WhiteVinegar #PatioMagic #DIYHomeCare
