Initially, the house featured a small, inadequate galley-style kitchen, which was unsuitable for their young family and desire for relaxed entertaining. To remedy this, they decided to convert a large sitting room into a combined kitchen, dining, and living space. The transformation was overseen by Helen Robson, a senior designer at deVOL, who focused on integrating the new kitchen seamlessly with the room's existing architectural features. The room's impressive size, soaring height, period windows, and restored parquet floor presented both opportunities and design considerations. The chosen cabinetry, from deVOL’s 'The Real Shaker Kitchen' collection, was selected for its classic aesthetic, which harmonized with the property's age. The dark 'Pantry Blue' painted finish on the cabinetry provided a contemporary touch and essential definition within the spacious, off-white room. A key design element was the integration of appliances and storage. The range cooker was cleverly recessed into the original fireplace, with the extractor fan concealed within the chimney breast, preserving the room's historical integrity. Above both the cooker and the sink, shelves supported by classic-style brackets were installed, offering decorative display space for the owners' vintage collections. This thoughtful placement allowed personal touches to be incorporated without cluttering the main living areas. The central island serves as the primary food preparation area and includes a breakfast bar at one end, demonstrating the dual functionality desired by the family. The island's rustic oak countertop at the breakfast bar provides a tactile and warm surface, contrasting with the durable Opal Carrara Quartz used for the rest of the kitchen's work surfaces. Brass details, such as cupboard latches and a hanging rail above the cooker, further enhance the warmth and traditional feel of the space. Large vintage factory lights, sourced by the homeowners, act as striking focal points, drawing attention and adding industrial charm.
