This Living Room Makeover Has the Dreamiest Green Paint Color
Rosaline Elbay's search for an apartment in New York concluded with a Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, rental that featured a fireplace, brick walls, and large windows in the living room. These architectural elements captivated her, leading her to select this particular space. Upon moving in, she opted to paint the non-brick walls using Farrow & Ball’s Calke Green. This specific shade, combined with the natural greenery visible outside the windows, contributed to a serene atmosphere, making the space feel detached from the urban environment of New York.
The living room's transformation into a cozy retreat involved several key steps. Following the application of the green paint, Rosaline focused on incorporating artwork to adorn the walls. She developed a gallery wall above the fireplace, a process she describes as involving considerable trial and error. Her method included using Command strips to temporarily position art pieces, allowing her to assess their placement over a day or two before making a final decision. Rosaline's advice for creating an effective gallery wall emphasizes varying the size and texture of the pieces. She recommends mixing sculptures with paintings and prints to add visual interest. The spacing between objects is also crucial, and she balanced smaller items in the gallery wall with a larger painting across the room. Additionally, she suggested refurbishing inexpensive old frames by painting them, noting that painting some frames to match the wall color or using variations of green helped unify the display and prevent a chaotic appearance.
One of the most significant challenges in decorating the living room was determining the optimal furniture arrangement. The layout was complicated by the position of the bathroom door, which limited the effective utilization of the entire space. Rosaline experimented with numerous configurations, including one that incorporated a full-size dining table, before discovering a solution. She describes finding the diagonal orientation for her furniture as a "fluke 3-in-the-morning idea" that ultimately resolved many layout issues and gave the room its distinctive character.
In addition to the overall design, Rosaline implemented several clever small-space solutions. These included various wall-mounted shelves and under-sofa storage options. A particularly notable DIY project was the creation of her sofa tables. Starting with plain black TV tray tables, she adorned the tabletops with mother-of-pearl mosaic, which she grouted and sealed. She expressed pride in this project, viewing it as a successful introduction to mosaic work and a functional piece she uses daily for breakfast and coffee.
