This is the one place Feng Shui experts say you should never put your sofa – and it's a surprisingly common layout
The placement of a sofa is a crucial element in living room design, often dictated by the layout of windows and television sets. However, according to Feng Shui principles, a common practice of placing a sofa in front of a window should be avoided due to its impact on energy flow and stability within the home. Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice, focuses on creating harmony between individuals and their environment by optimizing supportive energy through elements like furniture placement.
Feng Shui experts, including interior designer and Feng Shui expert Laili Kafi González and New York-based Feng Shui expert Sylvia Li, emphasize that positioning a sofa against a window creates an imbalance in a room's energy. This arrangement obstructs the free flow of 'chi' or energy, leading to feelings of instability and restlessness. The primary reason for this is the lack of a solid background behind the sofa; a window does not provide the same supportive energy as a solid wall. The absence of this solid support can undermine the overall stability and comfort within the living space.
For optimal Feng Shui, the sofa should be positioned against a solid wall, ideally centered. This placement provides a strong, supportive foundation. Furthermore, experts recommend arranging the sofa so that occupants can see the room's entrance, fostering a sense of control and security. Sylvia Li suggests placing the sofa on the wall farthest from the entryway to achieve this optimal view and maximize the feeling of command over the space.
While sofas should not be placed in front of windows, other types of furniture are suitable for this area. Low-height and lightweight items, such as console tables or plant stands, are acceptable. These pieces allow natural light to flow freely and help maintain positive energy, while also providing a subtle visual boundary. If additional seating is required in a room with numerous windows, solid-backed chairs are preferable to a sofa, as they offer more support. Alternatively, leaving the space in front of a window clear of furniture can enhance the feeling of spaciousness and align with minimalist interior design aesthetics. Bookshelves or other items can be placed on the walls flanking the windows instead, preserving the open flow of energy.
