Chris Wolston’s Wicker Chairs Weave Bodily Exuberance with Functionality
Chris Wolston, an American artist and designer, explores the integration of the human form with chair design, drawing inspiration from the traditional mimbre (wicker) craftsmanship of Medellín, Colombia. His 'Nalgona' series is characterized by an anthropomorphic approach, where chairs are envisioned as embracing human forms through their unique shapes and features. Wolston describes these creations as simultaneously chairs and a 'human form embracing a human form,' aiming to infuse playfulness and joy into functional furniture.
The design process for these distinctive chairs begins in Wolston's Medellín studio. He first sculpts preliminary chair forms from clay, which then serve as a basis for detailed blueprints. Following this, a metal frame is welded to provide the structural foundation for the wicker weaving. The actual weaving is carried out by local Medellín artisans, who are highly skilled and have decades of experience in working with wicker sourced from the Colombian Amazon. These weavers meticulously bring each piece to life, adding intricate details row by row.
The 'Nalgona' series features chairs with expressive elements such as raised, wiggly arms, arched legs, and anatomically suggestive bottoms. These characteristics contribute to the chairs' exceptionally humanistic and welcoming aesthetic. The collaboration with local artisans not only highlights traditional Colombian craftsmanship but also emphasizes the sustainability of using locally sourced materials. Wolston's work merges contemporary design concepts with traditional techniques, creating pieces that are both artistic and practical.
Wolston's forthcoming solo exhibition, 'Chris Wolston at Hotel Bel-Air,' is scheduled to open in Los Angeles on October 25. The exhibition will provide a platform to showcase these unique wicker creations, further emphasizing his distinctive approach to furniture design. His work has gained recognition for its innovative blending of sculptural art with functional objects, challenging conventional notions of furniture. Through his designs, Wolston encourages a re-evaluation of the emotional and physical interaction people have with everyday objects, transforming a simple chair into a piece that evokes warmth and personality. His designs are not merely utilitarian but act as sculptural statements that engage with the viewer on an emotional level.
