Candace Shure of Shure Design Studio was tasked with reimagining the home for a young lawyer and first-time home buyer, aiming to infuse it with joy, relaxation, and productivity. Instead of a complete overhaul, the design approach focused on sustainability by retaining existing quality materials such as flooring and kitchen components. The primary challenge was the home's monochromatic aesthetic and mismatched lighting fixtures. The client, who splits his time between Downtown L.A. and working from home, desired a vibrant and personal space. Shure Design Studio strategically added impact to the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home, with particular attention paid to the kitchen and dining room. The galley kitchen, which had a significant gap, was enhanced with a custom island painted in a contrasting deep navy (Sherwin Williams' Indigo Batik) and adorned with unique brass and inlaid bone hardware. This design choice ensured the new island complemented the existing white cabinets and countertops while adding the client's personality. The small dining area, positioned off the kitchen and in front of French doors leading to the patio, was optimized with a custom banquette. This solution maximized space in the awkward corner, with a notable feature being velvet cylinder forms hanging by leather straps for the banquette's back, and custom iron legs under the seat. The living room presented a layout challenge due to its narrowness, requiring careful selection of furniture dimensions to ensure a comfortable flow. The client had already ordered an emerald green velvet sectional, which, fortunately, fit the space and became a bold statement piece, aligning with the designer's desire to incorporate vibrant colors. The primary bedroom, benefiting from natural light and direct access to the backyard, was designed to maintain a sense of lightness while featuring a bold accent wall and an unexpected bed choice. A blue-toned wallpaper and an arched canopy bed were incorporated, reflecting the client's preference for shades of blue. Further inspection revealed serious structural problems, including rotting flooring under the primary bathroom due to inadequate waterproofing during the flip. The bathroom's design was cramped, featuring a poorly placed shower/tub combo and a single vanity with minimal clearance. To address these deficiencies, Cheng's team initiated a comprehensive remediation and redesign process. The initial steps involved rectifying cosmetic issues in the main living areas. The flipper's choice of cobalt blue for interior doors was replaced with classic stained hardwood to complement the vaulted ceiling, and the original Swiss Coffee wall paint was updated to a softer, more neutral white. The homeowners took the initiative to refresh the kitchen themselves by repainting cabinets and redoing the backsplash, integrating a minor facelift into the larger renovation. This exclusive facility serves as a first-hand brand experience for VIPs, media partners, and customers, allowing them to immerse themselves in the history and craft of Patrón tequilas. The guest house integrates art, architecture, local design, and Hispanic heritage, reflecting the brand's creation process. The project was a collaborative effort between Patrón’s architectural department and three local firms: Joaquin Homs Studio for interior design and interior landscaping, GVA architects for general landscape, and Grupo CASGO for construction management. The 20-room guest house, not open to the public, features dining and entertainment areas, a full-service bar, and conference facilities, offering world-class hospitality. Designed in a traditional Spanish Colonial style, La Casona incorporates architectural details from 1800s Spanish, French, and Italian designs to acknowledge their historical influence on Mexico. These traditional elements are seamlessly blended with modern design to achieve a cohesive, updated aesthetic. Joaquin Homs, who was deeply involved in the project, noted the correlation between the historical hacienda economic systems and the labor-intensive tequila distillation process. He emphasized the importance of community involvement, engaging over 2,000 local townspeople in creating almost all interior and exterior design elements. The design team implemented bioclimatic architectural processes to suit the local climate and pay homage to historical hacienda design principles. Features such as 16’ 6” high ceilings and strategically angled windows ensure optimal natural lighting and ventilation. Custom lighting systems compensate for variations in natural light throughout the day. The main building’s statement chandelier, crafted by local artisan Ernesto Cruz, features recycled glass and reclaimed wood with working bees on agave plants, symbolizing the importance of agave bees in tequila production. Other lamps and sconces are handmade from forged iron, metal, copper, hand-blown glass, and ceramic tile by local Mexican artisans. Attention to detail extends to the furnishings and fabrics, which are custom-made. Mattresses are custom-sized, and linens are locally sourced.
