You'll NEVER Believe How Much Those Elaborate Holiday Light Displays Cost
The tradition of elaborate holiday light displays, popularized by movies like 'Christmas Vacation,' comes with significant financial implications. While these displays bring joy and have become a cherished family tradition for many, the cost extends beyond the initial purchase of decorations to substantial electricity bills and potential professional installation fees. The article delves into the historical origins of Christmas lights, tracing them back to 17th-century Germany where candles were used to symbolize the return of light during dark winter months. This tradition evolved over centuries to today's complex and often musical light shows that transform entire neighborhoods and towns into festive spectacles.
Dara Greaney, CEO and Founder of LEDlightexpert.com, provides insights into the potential costs. For instance, using 30 strands of incandescent lights can lead to an annual energy bill of $840, in addition to the initial decoration cost of $1,000 to $5,000. Clark Griswold's iconic 25,000 mini twinkling lights, for example, are estimated to cost over $2,000 in current energy rates. Beyond electricity, professional installation services add another layer of expense, ranging from $1,500 to $4,500, or approximately $2 to $5 per foot of roofline, depending on the scale and complexity of the design. In areas renowned for their extensive displays, such as Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, the cost for decorating a single house can reach up to $8,000.
However, there are strategies to mitigate these costs while still achieving an impressive holiday display. Greaney suggests focusing on outlining key architectural features and highlighting a few specific areas with lights, which can significantly reduce expenses for lights, energy, and setup/takedown efforts. The Department of Energy advocates for the use of LED light bulbs, citing their longevity, durability, and comparable or superior light quality compared to other lighting types. LEDs are more robust due to their epoxy lenses, making them less prone to breakage than traditional glass bulbs. An LED string light, for example, could last for 40 holiday seasons. Another cost-effective and visually striking option is a laser light display, which offers an affordable and dramatic alternative to extensive string lighting.
Ultimately, the decision to create an extravagant light display or to enjoy the spectacles created by others remains a personal choice, balancing festive ambition with financial practicality.
