Vienna Design Week 2010: The Bulb Fiction Show
The "Bulb Fiction" show, held in the Hernals neighborhood of Vienna at the Klaus Engelhorn Depot, showcased a diverse collection of lighting objects, spanning from the late 1960s and early 1970s to contemporary designs. Curated by Michael Turkiewicz of designandart.at and Gabriele Ruff, the exhibition explored the future of lamp design in anticipation of the phasing out of incandescent bulbs and the transition to energy-saving alternatives. The show featured newly commissioned pieces alongside historical lighting, creating a dialogue between past and present design philosophies concerning illumination.
A central theme of the exhibition revolved around the question: "What will happen to lamp designs when incandescent bulbs run out?" This query prompted Vienna-based designers to conceptualize and create light sources that address the evolving landscape of lighting technology. The curated collection highlighted innovative approaches to this challenge, emphasizing both aesthetic considerations and practical solutions for energy efficiency.
Among the notable exhibits was mischer'traxler's "Relumine" lamp, which ingeniously integrated two lamp typologies that share or contend for the light source of a single fluorescent bulb. This design demonstrated a creative use of existing energy-efficient technology within a novel form factor. POLKA presented their "Perlenlicht" lamp, an oversized, pearl necklace-like prototype designed as a wall-mounted light object. Monica Singer of POLKA described the piece as playing with the alteration of dimension and context, transforming an everyday object like a pearl necklace while also referencing traditional Viennese staircase lighting, often characterized by simple glass globes.
Another innovative piece featured was claassen & partner's "Van Zipper" light, a design that allows users to adjust the light's intensity by opening or closing zippers. This interactive element provided a tangible connection between user action and light output. PRINZGAU/podgorschek contributed the "Kreis -Kugell - Zufall" chandelier, a sophisticated design produced by the renowned glass manufacturers J&L Lobmeyer, blending artistic expression with traditional craftsmanship.
The exhibition also included works from a wide array of other designers, such as Michael Anastassiades' "Kinetic -2 Pendulum Lamp," Charlotte Dumoncel d'Argence's "Vanitas Lamp," NEXT architects & Aura Luz Melis' "Slow Glow Lamp," and Tejo Remy's "Milk Bottle." Other participating designers included Florence Doleac, Joel Degermark, Lonneke Gordijn/Drift, Rody Graumans, Stuart Haygarth, Tomas Hoke, Chris Kabel, and Marcus Tremonto, all of whom contributed to the diverse exploration of contemporary lighting design and its future. The show underscored the ongoing evolution of lighting solutions in response to technological advancements and environmental considerations.
