Our Favorite Shower Curtains
This article details an extensive research and testing process to identify the best shower curtains available, aiming to assist consumers in making informed purchasing decisions for their bathrooms. The project involved 45 hours of research and testing across 24 different shower curtains, alongside consultations with experts from the New York City Department of Sanitation and FCC Environmental Services regarding disposal, and a professional house cleaner for maintenance tips. The selection criteria focused on design versatility, cost-effectiveness, material quality (avoiding PVC due to toxic off-gassing), ease of care (prioritizing machine-washable options), and reliable stock availability.
The testing methodology included a thorough examination of materials and construction, assessing fabric feel, texture, design details, and hook hole evenness. Shower curtains were measured before and after multiple wash and dry cycles (for fabric curtains) to evaluate shrinkage and durability. Vinyl curtains were scrubbed and wiped according to manufacturer instructions. Drying speed was also a key factor, with water applied to each curtain to time how long it took to dry, a crucial consideration for humid environments or bathrooms with poor ventilation. Finally, user-friendliness was evaluated by hanging each curtain and noting the ease of installation and how it performed during actual showers.
Five top picks emerged from this rigorous process. The Threshold Waffle Weave Shower Curtain was selected as a versatile, affordable, and durable cotton-polyester option that offers a spa-like aesthetic, despite some shrinkage after washing and a longer drying time. The Quiet Town Sun Shower was highlighted as a vibrant, high-quality, heavyweight clear vinyl curtain made from EVA (a PVC-free alternative), suitable for use alone or as a liner, though it requires hand-washing for deep cleaning and does not offer privacy. The Maeve by Anthropologie Embroidered Scalloped Cotton Shower Curtain was praised for its elegant, preppy design and wrinkle-resistant cotton material, but noted for potential dye bleeding in darker colors and slow drying. The Block Shop Textiles Diamond Shower Curtain stood out as an artistic, hand-block printed 100% cotton curtain known for its water-repellent properties and double-sided print, but it may experience color bleeding during the first wash. Lastly, the Dusen Dusen Tulip Shower Curtain was chosen for its cheerful, transparent EVA plastic design, which offers a playful aesthetic while still being durable and PVC-free, though it requires hand-washing to prevent soap scum buildup.
In addition to shower curtains, the article recommends essential accessories. The Maytex Water Repellent Fabric Shower Curtain Liner (also branded Zenna Home) is highlighted as an affordable, machine-washable polyester liner with weighted bottom corners that can also function as a standalone curtain. For hooks, the Quiet Town S-Hooks are recommended for their minimalist design and rust-resistant, single-piece metal construction, while Moen Shower Curtain Rings are suggested for their dual-hook design that separates the curtain from the liner for easier cleaning and smooth gliding. Finally, Amazer Shower Curtain Hooks are noted as a budget-friendly, durable option that accommodates both curtain and liner with smooth operation and a wide range of colors.
